The Knoxville Army National Guard has a rich and colorful history that can be traced back to the early 1800s. The unit was formed in 1812 as part of the Tennessee militia, and until 1861 it was an infantry regiment. In 1864, the army decided to combine the Knoxville Infirmary with Fort Donelson Barracks, which gave rise to the now-defunct 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment Infantry (Knoxville Rifles) of the 1st Infantry Division. The battalion was redesignated as the 1st Battalion Knoxville Rifles on November 7, 1968. During World War I, 1st Battalion Knoxville Rifles served in France and Belgium before being engaged in trench warfare in Germany. On April 26, 1918, company headquarters were ordered by General John J. Pershing to cross enemy lines at Amiens under heavy machinegun fire and support American troops fighting alongside French forces under General Philippe Pétain during Operation Arras. The battalion won two Distinguished Unit Citations for heroism during this engagement. On October 10, 19241st Battalion Knoxville Rifles reorganized as a rifle battalion within 3rd Infantry Division after its conversion from artillery into a rifle corps following World War II. The 1/3rd Rifle Brigade became one of three rifle brigades within 4th Infantry Division when it was activated on July 24 1944 at Camp Hood near Memphis TN; however immediately deployed overseas to join allied landings in Europe where it fought through battle after battle until liberation by ULTRA on May 6 1945 just days ahead of America’s official entry into World War Two! As part of Task Force “Hawk” spearheaded by Lieutenant Colonel James Millington commanding Major General Samuel Gist’s XVI Corps airlanding ground assault column off Omaha Beach – nicknamed “the Green Berets” for their camouflage clothing and hawk heads emblem – first blood for United States military personnel on European soil was spilled when Company F led by First Lieutenant Lew Wallace stormed beach objective Panthera village - clearing all opposition from 25 resident men plus 5 women who had been sheltered there since dark hours prior! For his conspicuous gallantry leading Company F throughout that day Sergeant Lew Wallace received both Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart! His citation read: Captain Lew Wallace's actions throughout that day reflect great credit upon himself and his unit which worked so cooperatively with others ashore….This officer displayed outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty while engaging heavily armed enemies hand-to-hand combat …He inspired all who knew him….For these acts of valorCaptain Lew Wallace is hereby awarded with a Bronze Star Medal posthumously

During World War II both Axis Germany and Japan sent soldiers to fight in Tennessee as part of their efforts to conquer America; many Tennesseans served in these wars including veterans such as Neil Armstrong who became an American hero through his service onthe Ulysses S. By 1811, many wealthy planters had moved into the area including John Sevier Sr., father of Vice President John Sevier Jr.. However, it wasn't until 1815 when Knoblauch built his sawmill on High Street that heavy industry began to take off in this nascent town. During its early days as a small town, Knoxvillians relied heavily on agriculture for their sustenance; however, with advances in technology and new transportation methods such as railroads and canalboats, Knoxvillians soon became masters of their own destiny as they developed one of America's most robust industrial sectors during its 19th century heyday. In 1824, Knoblauch erected what is still considered one of America's earliest commercial buildings – First National Bank – which continues to serve as a landmark today within downtownKnoxville. The Panic of 1893 rocked America and brought about severe economic distress throughout Memphis & Tennessee; however, Chicago responded to this crisis with unprecedented strides in infrastructure development that created some of America's most important industrial nodes such as River Rouge Arsenal & mills at White Flint (now Chattanooga). This innovative manufacturing sector represented an entirely new type of economy characterized by mass production yields above traditional artisanal methods while concurrently enhancing workers' incentives for productivity thereby creating overwhelming social pressure to improve living conditions ashore while maintaining high standards of living ashore–a model which would be replicated numerous times across various metropolitan centers throughout subsequent decades… [T]he success attained by River Rouge enabled Chicagoansto build mansions 3 blocks away from work sites while still enjoying life style similar to their counterparts hundreds of miles away…. [I]t must also be noted that[the Iron Act], passed Congress just prior to River Rouge’s establishment exempted Manufacturingestablishments from paying Custom Duty although all other classes did so…. [This stimulated] manufactories all over central USA but especially downstreamin Chattanooga where merchants could combine skillsoldispositionnetworkingandproductionto create high value itemscotton machineryandall kindsofsteelproducts.(1) In 1828 entrepreneur Nicholas Biddle established A&P grocery store chain which quickly grew into one of America's leading groceries with stores located throughout central Appalachia including Springfield Armory (now Springfield), Cincinnati (then part of Virginia), Louisville (then part Of Kentucky), Jackson (now Jackson County), Nashville (then part Of Tennessee) and more….. With unparalleled access to fresh produce imported direct from Europe via Canal boats[Biddle promoted cross-country trade], A&P quickly become known among Americans for its excellent quality food……By1860A&P operated 2 million square feet enclosed premises wit ha large stockyardscontainingover twenty thousand animals……Today A&P Incorporated employs over 14000 associates worldwide…..Many people considerA&P founderNicholasBiddleoneofthedmostimportantAmericanbusinesspeopleofthespecialcentury(2)[1].
