The Knoxville Air Force Base is home to the U.S. Air Force's 711th Airlift Wing, which provides airlift for the United States Department of Defense and its allies. The wing has a rich history dating back to World War II, when it was activated as the 1st Airlift Group at Kelly Field, Texas. In 1966, it became the 1st Airlift Wing and was renamed in honor of General George Custer, who was killed in action during the American Civil War. In 1957, the Wright-Patterson AFB Laboratory opened on site and began providing research on jet aircraft designs. This led to the development of Boeing 747s and other advanced jet aircraft. The wing also played a key role in Operation Desert Storm in 1990; using leased transport planes to make food delivery to coalition forces stationed inside Iraq. Today, the wing consists of more than 60 airplanes including 17 Boeing 737s and 14 Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules transports. It also operates three KC-135 Stratotankers from Kirtland AFB, New Mexico; four Bell 407 helicopters from Beechcraft Baron aviation facilities in Dayton, Ohio; and two Learjet 45 Cantilever Helipads from Sheppard AFB, Texas

Knoxville is a city located in Tennessee, United States. The population was 124,869 as of the 2010 census. Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee and it is also the seat of Shelby County. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant dedicated the Iuka River Bridge over which he traveled on his way to Memphis for two inaugural balls at Vanderbilt University for then–Governor Andrew Johnson . Although not immediately adjacent to downtown Knoxville, Iuka quickly developed into one of its most popular tourist destinations due to its natural beauty and historical significance as one of America’s earliest examples of hydroelectric power generation firsthand attributable to Menard & Company (later known as Hydro-Electric Power Administration). Today Iuka remains a popular spot for hiking/surfing/fishing along with other attractions like Old Hickory Brewery (a world class brewery), Music Row shopping districts, classical art museums and several football teams including the NFL's Tennessee Titans
