The Knoxville Air Force Base is home to the Tennessee Air National Guard's 141st Fighter Wing, which leads all fighter wings in the United States. The wing provides air support for Operation Iraqi Freedom and other military operations. In 1955, when the base was established as an airfield, it was located on Willow Creek in eastern Knox County. In 1957, the wing moved to its current location at Knob Hill AFB in central Knox County. In 1977, the wing assumed responsibility for tactical jet aircraft and began flying F-5E/F Super Sabres. In 1991, the 141st Fighter Wing became a Tactical Air Command (TAC) unit and transitioned to F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters. It continued providing combat support until 2002 when it was transferred back to NORAD control as part of Operation Joint End Game. Since 2007, the 141st FW has been providing mission training for USAF cadets from Tennessee's two other military academies: West Point and USMA/Athletic directorate at Lexington-Fayette . This program provides young officers with experience leading and flying combat missions before they join active duty or become airborne troops serving overseas. Knoxville, Tennessee is a small city located in the east side of the state of Tennessee. The population was 97,824 at the 2010 census. Today, Knoxville remains an important cultural center for East TN with many popular tourist spots including Neyland Stadium (home of Tennessee Volunteers football), Gatlinburg (site of Tennessean scintillating winter activities) and Pigeon Forge (locality adjacent to Gatlinburg).
