The first European to visit Kingsport was James Robertson in 1799. He named it after his ancestor, King George II of England. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson's army hit the town while retreating from Mobile Bay and burned everything they could find- including churches and homesick families who had come to see their hometown destroyed. The destruction managed to stir up enough excitement among the population that they rebuilt quickly and renamed themselves "Kingsport" in honor of their new hero- as recorded by one diaryist: Kingsport grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War due to its strategic location on a narrow bend in the Holston River near boatspital Creek which made it easy for Confederate forces to supply transports carrying munitions and soldiers back into Tennessee across Mobile Bay

Kingsport was founded by General James Hays in 1811 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. In 1818, it became an incorporated town. The first mayor was John Brownell and the first justice of the peace was Nathaniel Pope. On July 24, 1819, Kingsport hosted its first national convention of Americans under the auspices of the American Philosophical Society. The town's post office opened on September 25, 1840. The railroad arrived in Kingsport in 1869 and soon made it a center for cotton production and shipping. By 1902, railroads had eliminated most local transportation options and Cotton Belt development transformed Kingsport into one of America's largest manufacturing towns. Continuous industry has led to high levels of pollution which have caused several environmental disasters including major floods that destroyed much of downtown in 1965 and 2008; however these have been largely overshadowed by other achievements such as being home to both Liberty University (founded in 1777) and world-renowned music festivals like Ozzfest (now known as Coachella). The site where present day Kingsport stands was once part of what were called Cherokee Nation lands east of Knoxville that were ceded to the United States following their war with Mexico in 1848 This area included what are now parts of Hardin County including Kingstowne Township which laid claim to land between Lexington Pike/Kingston Road on one side while Pigeon Forge Creek ran along Baldwin Highway on another side However this claim never resulted in anything more than discussion until after General James Hays moved his military forces from Clarksville across country towards what is now Chattanooga during the early 1800s when he discovered rich mineral deposits near here This area would later become known as Cherokee Nation land because many Cherokees living east of Knoxville sold their holdings back to U S Government hands
