Kingsport is a small town in the Knox County area of Tennessee. The population was 9,000 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River, about 17 miles (27 km) east of Nashville and 32 miles (51 km) south of Chattanooga. Kingsport has been a military installation since World War II. The first troops to arrive were Confederate officers who fought in the war as part of General Robert E. Lee's army. After the war, Kingsport became home to an American airbase used by both Allied and Axis forces during World War II and later served as a base for NATO forces during the Cold War. Since Kingsport was once a military installation, it has also been home to many civilian contractors working on various projects within the local community. Some notable contractors have included Lockheed Martin, Boeing Company, Hewlett-Packard Company, Cummins Engine Company and Southern Research Institute. Today, Kingsport remains an important military installation with numerous services including United States Army Reserve Command Headquarters; United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune; United States Air Force Base Campbell; and United States Coast Guard Station Kingsport which provides law enforcement services within the town as well as coastal patrols along the Cumberland River.

Kingsport has been home to several important institutions including Vanderbilt University, which moved from Knoxville to Kingsport in 1881;[3] Hardin County Courthouse;[4] and Belknap Methodist Church which was built in 1892.[5][6][7]
