Air Force gift history in Kingsport, Tennessee began with the donation of a bomber plane to the United States Air Force in 1941. The plane was named the P-51 Mustang and was used for training by fighter pilots. It was donated by General Leslie Groves, chairman of the War Department's Aircraft Board. In 1957, King County purchased the aircraft from General Electric Company and renamed it the KC-135 Stratotanker. The KC-135 served as a Flying Training Center until 2003 when it moved to Edwards AFB, California. In 2001, King County purchased an additional P-51 Mustang from Boeing Co., which had been stored at Wilmington Airport in Delaware since 1978. This plane was designated asKC-9A Starlite II and is currently being operated by Naval Air Warfare Command (NAWAC) at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. In 2006, King County leasedFormerly RAF Valley View from English Electric Plc., who had stored it there since 1948 under lease to USAF/Navy aviator Dick Whitefield for use as a jet trainer program center for RAF Valley View pilots instructor schools during peacetime until his death in 2004. The Royal Air Force Museum (RAF) is located on adjacent land near Gosport town centre in Hampshire within easy walking distance of both Kingsport and Gosport centre if one desires more than just a quick visit to any two places within that small geographical area! RAF Valley View units were based at nearby RAF Bassingbourn before moving westwards to RAF Wittering between 1942 and 1945 then finally disbanding there following World War II on 15th September 1946 having flown over 1 million miles! On December 6, 1941, the United States entered World War II. The Kingsport Air Force Base was activated and began serving America's war effort. In 1942, the base housed two Boeing B-29 Superfortresses. That year also saw the first use of jet aircraft at Kingsport when a P-39 Airacobra became the first jet bomber to fly from the base. In 1944, King AFB became home to the primary Strategic Air Command (SAC) bomber force in Tennessee and was one of only four bases in SAC. During World War II, pilots at Kingsport flew more than 3500 missions over Japan and scored 386 enemy kills. After hostilities ended in 1945, RAF Bomber Command took control of airfields in Britain and returned aircraft from these locations to service at Kingsport AFB. On September 2, 1948, the last Boeing B-29 Superfortress departed for California after completing its 54th mission; it had been stationed here since 1941. The base then transitioned to an all-jet operations with Republic F-94D Starfighters which arrived on October 1 of that year as part of Unified Tactical Air Command (UTAC). On November 15th UTAC dissolved due to budget cuts; however,Kingsport AFB continued flying jets into the 1970s under various nameplates including Tactical Fighter Wing/Air National Guard until it was disbanded on December 1st 1984 by President Reagan as part of his downsizing program within DOD.https://www2.libguidesinc Nashville TN.
