The city prospered through exports such as cotton (a valuable commodity at that time) and livestock products such as hay and cattle. However, during Reconstruction South Carolina seceded from America following Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House in 1865 which robbed JohnstonCity of much-needed tax revenue; this caused economic decline until Mayor Joseph Cotten restored some stability with his belttightening efforts in 1886-87 which culminated with passage of legislation creating two new cities within Williamson County - Nashville (the largest) and Clarksville (the smallest). Despite these challenges however, Mayor Cotten's vision for both cities eventually became reality with their incorporation into metropolitan areas status within North Carolina early in 2015 when both municipalities announced plans to merge into one municipality under their current names - Nashville/Clarksville Combined Statistical Area (CSA). With more than 2 million people now residing within its boundaries – including nearly 400 businesses – JohnstonCity is still one of our most populous towns according to Census Bureau Estimates released last year!
The first permanent settler in Johnson City was David Griggs, who arrived in 1819. He and his wife were the first white people to live in what is now Johnson City. The town was founded on the banks of the Tennessee River. The Griggs family built a set of log cabin homes near what is now downtown in 1824. They named their home "Johnson City" after General Andrew Johnson, who had been president of the United States at the time. The city grew slowly until it became a major port for cotton production during the late 1800s. In 1892, Johnson City was renamed Nashville after Andrew Johnson's Senate seat in Tennessee went to Abraham Lincoln because Nashville was then part of that state.
