The Johnson City Police Department has been providing law enforcement services in the city of Johnson City for over fifty years. The department was founded on July 1, 1951 when two policemen were assigned to the town of Johnson City as part of a new police force established by the Tennessee legislature. The first officer onduty at the department was Captain John A. Witherspoon. Since its inception, the Johnson City Police Department has had a number of colorful and memorable officers who have helped make our community one of distinction. Some of theseofficers include: Captains John A. Witherspoon (1951-1959), Harry Ladd (1960-1966), Bob Henson (1967-1971), Bob Carlson (1972-1974), Dick Sowers (1975-1978), Don Meredith (1979-1981), Wally Friesen(1982-1984) and Rick Sellers(1985-1987). Many members of the department are still with us today and continue to provide law enforcement services to our community. Thank you for your service!

The department has grown over time and now employs around 400 officers. In 1969, the Johnson City Police Department joined the Tennessee State Highway Patrol. Today, the Johnson City Police Department is one of six state law enforcement agencies that comprise the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Johnson City is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 10,059 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Johnson City was founded in 1853 by planters from Kentucky and Virginia as a small trading post on the Cumberland River. The original town was renamed Greeneville in honor of General Andrew Johnson, who had been elected U.S. president in 1868 and who had helped promote settlement of the area around Johnson City. The city began to grow rapidly during the early part of the 20th century as cotton plantations were abandoned and new residents moved into the area to work on new plantations or to find jobs on newly created highways connecting Nashville and Memphis. In 1918, Johnson City became an incorporated municipality with a population of 25,000 people; it grew even more rapidly during World War II when many local businesses supported military production throughout Tennessee. By 1940, Johnson City had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with such companies as Ford Motor Company, Boeing Aircraft Corporation, Coca-Cola Bottling plant (later Pepsi-Cola), Thoroughbred horse racing stable (latertransferring to Belmont Park), DeWitt’s department store (later Macy’s) and Miller Brewing company among its many notable businesses. However, economic decline started to set in during the late 1960s and 1970s as factory closures across America left American manufacturers struggling for marketshare around the world; by 1990 Johnson City had lost most of its major industrial base including its main employers—thus contributing to its shrinking population and economy over that period). However, recent growth has seen renewed development beginning to take hold withinJohnsonCity with ambitious plans for redevelopment including: In July 2013 Mayor Bill White announced that he would be seeking re-election against incumbent Tony Yarborough; Yarborough has consistently opposed any type of redevelopment within city limits since taking office in 2001 On December 1st 2013 it was announced that Lamar Smith had won election as US Senator from Tennessee against Mark Durbin which means that there will now be multiple seats up for grabs statewide next year
