When Confederate forces attacked Union forces near Johnson City onApril 12, 1865, few residents remained behind to defend their homes or businesses. Over 400 people died in this attack, which is still considered one of Chattanooga's worst disasters. After the war ended, Johnson City began to decline rapidly due to population losses and economic problems. However, it regained some stability early in the 20th century thanks to marketing efforts led by local entrepreneurs such as Halsey Gibson and Norman Bramlett. In 1916, Johnson City was renamed for President James Kenedy following his visit thereto that year. The town was chartered as a city on May 1, 1907 by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly. It became a state capital on July 1, 1909. Johnson City was originally built up around two large cotton mills which operated until the early 1930s when they were replaced by new aluminum smelters and other industrial plants. Today, most of the downtown business district has been vacated for housing developments; however, some businesses remain along Railroad Avenue and Spring Street including The Bookstore which opened in 1914 and remains an important cultural landmark in Johnson City today.
