The first European to visit Jackson was Majeed Smith in 1795. He named it after his native village in what is now Turkey Point on the Ohio River. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Knoxville to Jackson for fear that he would be surrounded by hostile Indian Territory settlers. In 1821, President James K. Polk sent federal troops under General Zachary Taylor to Occupy Cherokee Nation land east of the river where Fort Donelson had been built earlier that year as part of efforts to quell a Native American uprising against Ulysses S. Grant’s occupation forces. When Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Fort Donelson on April 9, 1821, most of those killed were Cherokee Indians who had come to help defend their people’s homes and belongings from Yankee invaders. For months afterward, children milked cows near Fort Donelson in order to provide food for Southern soldiers besieging the fort; when they ran out of milk five days later, they pooled their resources together and bought enough more from a white farmer downriver so that they could continue milking until relieved by Federal reinforcements on April 24th. In 1840–41,[7] Nashville began construction on an Erie Canal which connected Nashville with Chattanooga via Mississippi River water transportation ("canals"). Construction continued even though no locks or bridges existed at either end of the canal;[8] boats journeyed about 35 miles (56 km) each way past rapids called Cataloochee Rapids before reaching civilization again beyond Memphis or Knoxville.[9][10] The costliest project ever undertaken in antebellum Tennessee was completed without state government assistance: $24 million ($ in current dollars). By contrast, much cheaper but less impressive projects like road building during this period received far more attention because public expenditure financed large-scale infrastructure projects required for growth such as canals and railroads became standard throughout America during this era
