Jackson, Tennessee is a town in Loudon County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Jackson was founded in 1802 by Col. John Andrew Jackson and named for him after his home state of Georgia. The first store in Jackson was built on Main Street in 1806 by Peter Pettigrew, an early settler. In 1830, Jackson became the county seat of Loudon County; it reverted to its original name in 1905 when the county was organized into districts. The town emerged as a coal mining and manufacturing center during the late 19th century because of its location on the Cumberland Coal Fields and its access to water logged areas near Roane River. Although coal production stopped during World War II due to competition from oil and other minerals, post-war Jackson experienced growth as a bedroom community for Memphis until economic decline started around 2000%. Today's economy consists mostly of services such as health care and banking but there are some small businesses located within the city limits that continue to produce goods or services local residents need or want. Jackson has several unique features that have made it an interesting place to live and visit: 1) It is one of only two towns in America with both a Carnegie Library (built 1909) and an opera house (built 1924). 2) It also has two separate high schools - Davidson High School (founded 1923) which is known for its fine arts programs while Central High School (established 1912), which provides vocational education opportunities for students from low-income families who may not be able to afford private school tuition elsewhere. 3) One building locally known as "The White House" has been used by three different presidents since it was commissioned as presidential Suite No. 2 at The White House Hotel in Nashville in 1912 - James Buchanan (1801–1865), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1912–1945), and Lyndon B Johnson (1963–1968). 4) Its downtown district - containing government buildings such as courthouses, jails, libraries/theater/museums/etc., business districts including squares surrounding churches/mosques etc., residential neighborhoods like Hillcrest Estates developed starting around 1910s through 1920s - remains one of most active commercial corridors outside Memphis today despite having less than half the population present when originally built thanks to gentrification efforts over recent decades spearheaded by Downtown merchants groups led by Mayor Arie Luyendyk Jr..
