Jackson, Tennessee was founded by James Jackson in 1797. The town initially served as a trading post and until the early 1800s it was the most important settlement in what is now Tennessee. Jackson was named after General James Jackson, who fought in the American Revolution and became a powerful figure of that group. The town prospered due to its location on the Cumberland River and its strategic position as an endpoint for stagecoaches travelling between Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga, and other cities. In 1811, however, when war broke out with Mexico over Texas oil resources, Jackson withdrew his militia from Tennessee to fight in that conflict. Meanwhile, the town's population dwindled as others moved into the area or left because of economic reasons. By 1815 only a few hundred people remained in Jackson. However, despite this decline in population – which is likely due to factors such as disease –Jackson continued to be an important commercial center until 1861 when Confederate forces captured it during the Civil War. After the war ended and Reconstruction began., Jackson experienced a rapid growth typical of many postwar settlements; by 1870 it had more than 4100 residents and was one of the leading cotton-producing towns in America. However, by 1930 only about 350 people still lived there; since then much of what remains has been destroyed by hurricanes or tornado damage
