Jackson was founded in 1802 by General Andrew Jackson and his family. The present day town was laid out in 1814 by Colonel James Mclntyre and named for General Jackson's brother-in-law, John Sevier, who served as Governor of Tennessee from 1796 to 1800. The first post office in what is now Jackson opened on November 16, 1814, with David Keyes as the firstpostmaster. The current post office building was built in 1898 and dedicated by President Cleveland. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Greeneville with 1,500 men and set up camp there until ordered to march eastward by Union General Ulysses S. Grant under orders to besiege Nashville instead. When Union forces reached Greeneville on July 26th they found that Ewell had disappeared without Leave or explanation and no one knew where he had gone beyond report that he was visiting his family back home near Chattanooga. After numerous investigations it emerged that Ewell simply withdrew his army northward along the Cumberland River before Grant could arrive at all It wasn't until 1886 when an act of Congress provided for a post office within each county seat so that citizens living outside the county couldn't receive mail from their constituents unless they moved within the county boundaries which then required certification from a state official (an elected official) verifying that they were still living within their original boundaries after changing addresses In 1932 an addition to the main Post Office building allowed for overnight processing of mail while awaiting transport to Memphis The last general postal merger took place on October 15th 1978 when Knoxville became part of Johnson City Johnson City also gained its own ZIP code

In response to this act of defiance against what were then Georgia and Alabama governments, Jackson ordered his forces into action against these usurpers on January 15th, 1836. After heavy losses at Battle of Horseshoe Bend (January 17th), Jackson retreated back towards Memphis but kept growing popular among Tennesseans for his stand against aggression from outside sources. Many believe that if he had not relocated permanently to Nashville after Horseshoe Bend would have lost some of its importance due to competition from larger southern cities such as Atlanta or Mobile
