In 1916, Mr. Smith's son, Dick Smith took over the family business and continued the tradition of hand-roasting and packaging their own Coffee until 1984 when Dick passed away at the age of 86 years old. In 1984, Mr. Harry Laughlin opened his own Roastery & Cafe location in downtownJackson with his wife Peggy Laughlin as President/Operator/Custodian/Attendant/. Today, Mrs. Laughlin continues her role as President/Operator/Custodian/Attendant/. It was during this time that Msgr./Rev./Dr.-Edwin Gray started purchasing some of the Coffee from Mr. Harry Laughlin for sale to individuals and businesses throughout central Tennessee.. 1) In 1986, Dr.-Edwin Gray purchased 3 acres of land adjacent to White Sulphur Springs Golf Course on South Union Street from Jens Lindgren for $10K (which at that time included about 2 blocks south of where today's Starbucks sits). This parcel of land would later become known as "The Grainspit". 2) In 1988, Dr.-Edwin Gray built a new roastery which became known as The Grainspit II - still active today! 3) In 1990, Dr.-Edvin Gray married Gail Maundrell (nee Henson) who had also worked at The Grainspit II during its early days! They moved into their current home on Gaylord Avenue near Interstate 25 just north ofpresent day Goodwill Industries store before passing away in 2000 after many years togetherLiving life tothe fullest! 4) On October 5th 1992 - Old Style Day - The first Kaldi Bros./Green Mountain Coffee roast was made at Dr.-Edvin Gray’s new roastery located on Greenmount Ave., just east of I-25 exit 103A! 5) From then until now... every Kaldi Bros./Green Mountain Roast has been made Right here At home By DR.-EDWIN GRAY AND HIS FAMILY
