In Hendersonville, Tennessee, the national guard has been a part of the community for over sixty years. The first unit to be stationed in the town was mobilized in World War I and served until 1919. In 1924, the National Guard detachment in Hendersonville was elevated to full battalion status and began providing service throughout the state of Tennessee. The first unit to be stationed permanently in Hendersonville was activated on November 3rd, 1928 as Battery A (Volunteer) of the 9th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. The regiment had been disbanded but its members were re-organized and re-designated as Battery A (National Guard) of the 1st Brigade, 10th Division Tennessee State Militia on September 15th, 1928. The brigade had come into being as a result of an amendment to the National Defense Act which authorized establishment of state militias under section 8802(a) of Title 36 United States Code. This act also created a National Guard Bureau within the Department of Commerce and Labor which became responsible for all military activities by state militia units not subject to federal jurisdiction. The brigade’s activation represented an important step forward for Hendersonville because it gave residents access to some form of defense against possible future threats from outside sources. It also provided an opportunity for local businesses and citizens to get involved with their local militia unit through organized functions such as parades and concerts. During World War II, battery A (national guard) remained active until May 1945 when it was consolidated with other batteries into Battery C (volunteer). After World War II ended, battery C continued serving until itactivated on February 17th 1949 as Battery D (National Guard/Volunteer). From 1949 - 1959 there were no changes at this point; batteries D & E constituted separate battalions within battery C (national guard). On October 6th 1960 four volunteer battalions from Hendersonville were merged into one battalion designated “Hendersonville Volunteer Guardsmen” effective immediately pursuant thereto by order dated October 7th 1960 No 5595A2 3/5/1960 Cong Mod 2

Hendersonville was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson. The community had a population of only 100 people when it was platted and renamed Hendersonville in 1864 after Confederate general Braxton Bragg. In 1924, Hendersonville became the county seat for Davidson County. In 1971, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Davidson County must merge with Tennessean County to create a new metropolitan area called TNMSA. Since then, Hendersonville has seen rapid growth as an industrial center and bedroom community for both Nashville and Memphis. Today, Hendersonville is one of the most diverse communities in Tennessee with more than 30 different cultures represented. There is a very long history of the National Guard, and it includes both its present day incarnation as the United States Army's largest peacekeeping force and its past as a paramilitary organization that often collaborated with the government. The National Guard has always been seen as an important part of the American system of government, and its role in safeguarding essential rights and freedoms has come to be appreciated by many. The National Guard was created on July 4th, 1792 when President George Washington declared that all men over 18 years old should be enrolled in one of the country's militia forces. At first, the National Guard consisted only of men from New York State. In 1795, Congress passed a law authorizing military exercises within Rhode Island so that local militias could train for war against France. The Guardsmen acquitted themselves well during these exercises and were given permission to encamp in Providence. In 1800, General James Kettle (who would later become Governor) organized a regiment of New York Volunteer Militia to help suppress Tory rebels in western New York. This action set off a chain reaction of similar events across New England that ultimately led to independence from Great Britain. On February 14th, 1802, Congress increased the size of the National Guard by 3 brigades (or infantry battalions) to 34 companies under command of Major General Nathanael Greene. This increase allowed for better coordination between state militias and national guardsmen in defense against potential threats such as Canada or Mexico City. Throughout this time period, there were attempts by some sections of society to control or even eliminate members of the National Guard through secret societies or other means (e.g., secret ballot rigging at elections). However, these efforts usually failed without having any significant impact on overall mobilization or performance on battlefields. On September 11th, 1917 – just weeks after World War I ended – President Woodrow Wilson established two new reserve divisions called "The Divisional Reserve" and "The Divisional Auxiliary". These units were specifically designed to provide short-term emergency reinforcements for active duty services should hostilities break out anew within America. The additional manpower provided by these divisions helped keep our nation mobilized through both World Wars II and into today's era (). 2 months after Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan , President Franklin D Roosevelt activated almost all available federal troops including those assigned to rural areas who had never before seen combat . After World War II ended we pulled back but kept our military presence worldwide

Hendersonville is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Hendersonville was founded in 1801 as a tiny log cabin community on the banks of the Henderson River. The first post office in Hendersonville was established in 1802. The community grew rapidly due to its natural resources and agriculture, and by 1820 it had a school, store, and two churches. By 1830, Hendersonville had a population of 2,000 people. In 1836–37, the Tennessee General Assembly passed an act transferring all lands east of I-25 from Hickman Parish to Sevier County for compensation for Creek Indian land grants dating back to 1785. The town's growth slowed after World War II because of lack of available land and development opportunities outside of Memphis. In 1954, however, Hendersonville became one of sixteen towns in Shelby County that were consolidated into one county under the newly created Metro government structure. In 1974, Hendersonville received city status from Shelby County; it has since grown significantly with urban sprawl throughout its downtown area along US-27/I-40 corridor (the city limits). As part of this growth process, many small businesses have been replaced by larger ones over time – some dating back as far as 1850 – making Hendersonville one of the most populous cities within metro Memphis boundaries today (though still smaller thanMemphis itself).
