In 1862, after Confederate forces sacked Nashville, Tenn., Mr. and Mrs. Henderson moved their family to Ashtabula County, Ohio where they resided until their death in 1865. Hendersonville is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Hendersonville was founded in 1819 and named for General James Henderickson. It became a town in 1868 and then a city in 1907. The current mayor is Donny Lee Hill. Hendersonville is the county seat of Davidson County. The first European to visit Hendersonville was Colonel John Sevier on October 10, 1796 while his party of nine consisting of two soldiers and four servants travelled from Knoxville through Cumberland Gap on their way to join General Davy Jones expedition against Spanish forces on Mobile Bay. In 1819, General James Henderickson ordered Captain John Wilkinson to establish a permanent post at this location about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of present-day Hendersonville on the banks of the Little Tennessee River. Wilkinson arrived with his family and built a log cabin which he called "Henderson's Fort." He served as Postmaster until 1830 when he resigned because he could not financially support himself without government assistance. On July 15, 1868, the new City of Nashville was created by an act of the Tennessee State Legislature following enactment of the Morrill Act which granted voting rights to citizens over 21 years of age living within 1 mile (1 km) of an election precinct. The first meeting for incorporation occurred on November 14, 1869; however due to lack of space within the original City Hall building, Incorporation did not take place until January 6, 1870 under the name "Newbern & Henderson". On December 9th 1870 eleven residents met at Second National Bank Building located southbound off Church Street between 5th Avenue South and 7th Avenue South to begin discussion about forming a political organization known as "the Citizens' Union".
