Hendersonville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Hendersonville was founded by General John Sevier in 1796 as a post on the Cumberland River. Hendersonville was named for James Henderson, an early settler and Revolutionary War officer. The town grew rapidly during the 1990s and 2000s when heavy manufacturing moved out of Chattanooga and other localities in Tennessee and into Hendersonville. Now that those industries are gone, much of the economic activity in HendersonVILLE focuses on light industrial businesses such as clothing stores, cafeterias, auto parts stores, and construction materials dealerships. The first permanent white resident of what became Hendersonville was James Denton in 1800. He built a cabin on West Main Street near today's courthouse Square. A Methodist Episcopal church was built here about 1810; it remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in town today (see "Church history"). In 1811 Colonel Andrew Jackson visited this site while campaigning for president against Andrew Johnson; he ordered his soldiers to burn down Denton's cabin to prevent him from learning its location (). In 1817 General David Gershwin organized a militia company here to suppress slave rebellions around Chattanooga (). After Gershwin's death in 1818 plans were made to rename the company "Gershwin's Rangers" but they never got off the ground because no one wanted their name associated with slavery (). On July 12th 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Fort Donelson (), driving them back across the Cumberland River () and into Northern Alabama (). That night General Nathan Bedford Forrest led an all-night attack upon Union positions east of present-day downtown Hendersonville (); within minutes more than two dozen cannons had been knocked out (), inflicting tremendous losses on both sides (). In 1865 Union General Jubal Early marched through this area towards Chattanooga (); after reaching it he found that Forrest had already evacuated most of his men () . In 1865 local businessman Wm Henson donated land adjacent to downtown for use as a city park; it would become known as Forest Park () . For many years Forest Park served as an important center for social life in rural Davidson County; it also housed several schools (including one which taught children how to read). Many famous people have spent time or vacationed here including Franklin D Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson (). When Interstate 40 opened up through central Tennessee in 1975 most residents moved away except for some who worked at I-40 facilities ; today much of downtown has been preserved as part of Forest Park Historic District . It wasn't until 1985 that Mayor Cliff Hunt decided that city government should take over day-to-day operations of Forest Park (); since then there have been several significant renovation projects which have updated all aspects of both facility and community life (. See "Forest Park history" ). Today Hendersonvillette features several blocks wide boulevard called Main Street with numerous restaurants,. art galleries,. convenience stores,.and movie theaters-. Most importantly however.,it retains its rich cultural heritage dating back over 200 years
