Greeneville is a city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 25,928 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County and home to Greeneville High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The original nucleus of Greeneville was a small community on the east bank of the San Jacinto River. In 1825, General James Foard decided to move his army from Nashville to rest near Stevenson's Fort on what is now downtown Greeneville. From this location, General Foard could survey new battlefields where he would later lead Ulysses S. Grant'sArmy into battle during the American Civil War In 1892, entrepreneur Davenport McDowell started selling ice cream from a truck parked outside his grocery store on Main Street in downtown Greenevillo. The history of gifts given to the Navy during wartime dates back to before World War I, when sailors and marines presented bouquets of flowers or fruit to their commanders in recognition of their services. In 1941, gift giving became an institutionalized part of naval warfare as war with Japan began. As the Navy took on enemy forces in various theaters around the world, it was inevitable that there would be many unique and memorable gifts given to it during wartime. There are several hundred individual gifts that have been documented by NHC, dating from the days of sail into the present day. Many items offered for shipment to ports all over the world were personal effects or products used by military men and women aboard ship or ashore. Often these items were donated by friends and family members who knew sailor or Marine Corps members involved in a battle or campaign. Often these gifts were not just practical items but also expressions of love and support. One group particularly associated with navy deployments is Toys For Tots, which has distributed more than 2 million toys to troops worldwide since its inception in 1974.Toy donations have come from people throughout society, including students, business people, Veteran families, church groups and more. Greeneville is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Originally named Courthouse Point on the Cumberland River, Greeneville became an independent city in 1881 after the creation of Davidson County. The first permanent settler in what would become Greeneville was James Prentice and his family who arrived around 1790 from Scotland. They built their log cabin on what is now Middle Fork Road just east of present day downtown Greeneville. The Prentice Cabin still stands today and is a museum open to the public. The first African American to live permanently in Greensville was Mrs. Nancy Bowers who moved from Mobile, Alabama with her son Solomon Cotton early in 1892. Mr .Bowers had been born free but his mother died when he was young so he had to work as a tenant for several years before moving into his own house where he resided until 1896 when he bought a farmout west of town which he called Home Farmstead #2 which still stands today and forms part of downtown Greeneville’s – now “Old Town” district boundaries. In 1881, following the creation of Davidson County, Greeneville became an independent city under its own government with Aldermen George Gandy (1901-1902) and John Witherspoon (1902-1905). On October 1st that year residents voted by referendum to incorporate as a borough within Davidson County pending annexation by nearby Chattanooga if it were approved by county commissioners unsigned consenting thereto duly constituted therein without any violence or tumult being used either against or among said inhabitants thereof. On January 10th 1902nd while attending cabinet meeting pursuant to resolution adopted December 6th 1901 by common council providing for such meetings; A motion was made to adjourn due to lack of members; seconded by Mayor Witherspoon; carried unanimously with applause by all present having except one commissioner voting no; Clerk Purcell signified willingness to serve only annexed municipality thereby abolishing borough status for Greensville effective immediately prior thereto giving rise therefor to much excitement and consternation throughout town resulting chiefly from loud speaking exhibited on behalf of proponents thereof conducted largely unpeacefully outside doors leading up 5 Front Street thence rearwardly along 5 Front Streets doorstop until finally entering upon council chamber through front door thence up stairs whereupon quietus reigned until order could be obtained from speaker permitting bill introduction notwithstanding much shouting ensuing thereby terminating most exciting portionof meeting notwithstanding cries for pardon emanating from some quarters during adjournment proceedings hereinabove noted While dentists were present Messrs Fenton & Hargrave acting as supts filed bills relative thereto without calling attention theretoPresenting same were Messrs Jno Armstrong [sic] Geo Goode Geo Fenton [sic] Jas Weller & WM Morton
Greeneville is located in McMinn County, Tennessee. It was founded in 1814 by Captain George W. Robertson as the seat of a county which extended from the mouth of the Cumberland River to Knoxville. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, and by 1850 it had over 1,000 residents. Greeneville became a state capital in 1875 and was renamed Nashville after President James K. Polk's visit there that year.
