The Tennessee National Guard was organized on November 15, 1861. The first national guard unit in Greeneville was Company I of the 1st Regiment Tennessean Volunteers. The regiment was mustered into service on December 3, 1861 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John M. Blair. Company I served through all of the Civil War, fighting at Manassas Junction and other key battles including Lookout Mountain and Appomattox Court House. After the war ended, Company I disbanded on July 24, 1865. In 1922, a Second Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry (2nd TNVI) was raised in Greeneville to continue the tradition of military service by citizens from that city and surrounding areas who had enlisted during or after World War I. The 2nd TNVI served until it was redesignated as aSecond Tennessee Army National Guard unit on September 16, 1969; it then continued to serve until its activation as an 8th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) Division within the Georgia Army National Guard on November 5, 2007.
