Greeneville is a small town in Middle Tennessee, and for nearly seventy years, it has been home to the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division. The division was first activated in 1881 and has served in many conflicts, including World War II. Today, the division operates as part of the Seventh Cavalry Regiment and is responsible for providing support to units throughout the United States. One of thedivision's most famous assets is its military deployed gift history. The 3rd Infantry Division (known today as the 7th Cavalry Regiment) was originally organized on November 1, 1881. It was one of four infantry divisions formed during the American Civil War that were stationed at Camp Butler in Middle Tennessee until they were transferred to Fort Donelson on October 9, 1862. The other three divisions were positioned at Corinth Junction south of Memphis, Tennessee; Knoxville; and Nashville. These divisions fought in numerous battles during the war, including Atala Creek (March 4-8), Chickamauga (September 23-29), Missionary Ridge (November 17-20), Chattanooga (January 16-20), Marietta (May 15-19), Jonesborough (July 12-15), Union Mill Gap near Decatur Junction on Pumpkinvine Creek (), Newton Mill Gap north of Chattanooga (), Battle of Missionary Ridge near Lookout Mountain (), Battle of Wilson’s Mills () and Overland Campaign (). In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell withdrew from Nashville following his defeat at Franklin Field , all army troops except those located east of Louisville were mustered out under Agreement No . 8 cosponsored by Senators James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson . On September 25th 1865 , General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in Greeneville from Memphis with an immediate order to move against Johnston's forces westward through eastern Tennessee . According to historian John Lattimore "the Army had advanced rapidly since Hooker had taken command six weeks before" when Sherman left Memphis "...it may have been less than two months since General Forrest had led his cavalry into action around Murfreesboro ." This aggressive advance forced Johnston's army westward across central Tennessee towards Clarksville where he met them on October 11th 1865 . By this time Major General Jubal Early had detached his brigade from Johnston's army en route back to Georgia As Sherman approached Clarksville he ordered Colonel Charles Benton...to stop any bluecoats or others who might attempt to cross roads leading east from town ... several hundred men succeeded in doing so but it soon became evident that no active defence could be expected from these few desperadoes...When night fell a detachment consisting entirely of volunteer soldiers marched into town bearing messages from Colonel Benton commanding that no resistance should be made." On October 13th 1865 general Sherman reached Clarksville where he found Johnston "beside himself overdrive[d] with grief and disappointment" after learning that Atlanta would fall within three days
