Greeneville is a town in Middle Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,998 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Tennessee and the county seat for Greene County. At one time it was one of the largest cities in Tennessee, with a population of over 100,000. Today Greeneville remains an important center for trade and industry, as well as education and government services. The downtown area is home to several high-rise buildings that date back to the late 19th century, when this part of Tennessee was still a rural area. The first people who settled in what is now Greeneville were white farmers who moved from Kentucky during the 1810s and 1830s to start anew after experiencing slaveholder abuse there. By 1835 most of these settlers had left for other parts of Tennessee because they found it difficult to farm land that was constantly being flooded by rain or snowmelt. In 1838 James Sisson established Sisson's Mill on what would become Greeneville's main avenue—now known as State Route 16—and began producing flour, cornmeal, eggs and butter from mud bricks he had carried over from his native Kentucky. In 1840 John Maney built his mill on Main Street opposite Sisson’s; this became J&J Machine Factory later known as Wernham Hogg Clothing Company which manufactured clothing for American soldiers during World War I and II before merging with Macy’s Department Stores in 1984). Greeneville, Tennessee is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Greeneville was made by General Andrew Johnson on May 12, 1819 when he and his cavalry arrived from Arkansas to helpGeneral Henry Knox fight against Native Americans near present-day Chattanooga. Johnson's men built a log cabin and named it Greeneville after the location where they had been riding. In 1824, the state of Tennessee passed an act giving lands east of the Cumberland River to Davidson County for purchase from Cherokee Indians. The county seat was moved to Greeneville from Lebanon in 1827 because there were not enough settlers living in Lebanon proper to support a county seat. Greeneville became an important center for cotton production during the antebellum period because it had access to good transportation routes and fair prices for raw cotton goods sold throughout the region. Cotton exports increased during this time as well, helping drive economic development in both Greeneville and other parts of Davidson County. A second courthouse was built on Main Street in 1865 and served as the county seat until 1907 when new courthouse construction began on Broad Street downtown which continued until 1915. In 1915, Greeneville also became home to its third post office when First National Bank relocated from Tellico City acrossthe river into what is now known as Old Hickory Alley (later renamed Robertson Boulevard). With growth came social unrest during the late 19th century due largely to inequitable treatment of African Americans by white landowners in Davidson County despite efforts by officials such as Congressman John Atherton to improve conditions there over time.
