The town was founded by General James Robertson in 1807 as a stop on the Cumberland Road. Greeneville grew rapidly from its original settlement of just over 100 people to a small community with 2,000 residents by 1860. Greeneville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. The name derives from the Union Army's nickname for Chattanooga, "The Greeneville of the South", because of green forests near that city. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Williamson County were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1672 and named their new settlement New Netherland after Netherland (now Holland). They left behind a strong military presence and Fort Orange – still standing to this day – helped serve as a model for early Tennessee militia units. In 1701, English colonists arrived via ship from England and named their new settlement Greeneville after an area near Charlotte City on Edgecombe Island that they had discovered during their voyage. In 1802, Greeneville became part of American Revolutionary War-era Tennessee when General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Williamson County to attack British forces at nearby Mobile Bay. As part of the Treaty of Paris following the war, America acquired West Tennessee (including present-day Williamson County) as well as much of Alabama and Mississippi. When Tennessee attained statehood in 1907, Greeneville became its capital under then-Governor John Sevier. The current courthouse was built between 1906 and 1908 on land donated by James Hogg & Sons lumberyard owners along I-24/US 70 eastbound just south of downtown Greensville According to unofficial estimates conducted by the National Park Service in 2006–2007, nearly 2 million artifacts from Native American history are available for research or study at several federally designated sites located within walking distance of Greeneville including Big Stone Lake Indian Village Site (#4), Carter’s Creek Cherokee Nation heritage village (#2), Knoxville Battlefield National Monument (#1)
