Goodlettsville was founded in 1828 by James Goodlett and his brother George Goodlett. The two brothers built a log cabin on the banks of the River Donnie near what is now Old Hickory Boulevard and John Sevier Road. In 1830, James Goodlett married Martha White who had also come to America from England with her father and mother. They moved to Goodlettstown, Virginia in 1831 but later sold their land in Goodlettsville and moved to Knoxville in 1835. The original plan for Goodlettstown called for it to be the capital of the new state of Tennessee but when calls for new capital came up during the Civil War, Knoxville became the temporary capital until Nashville was rebuilt. James Goodlett died suddenly after farming his land near goodlettsville for many years and his widow continued to live there until her death in 1895. George Goodlett took over farming and ran it until he died in 1903. Goodlettsville is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County. The first known permanent settler in Goodlettsville was Samuel Goodlett, who arrived about 1798. He founded a small log cabin on what is now the north side of Main Street in 1802. A post office called Goodlettsville was established in 1811, and remained in operation until 1865. The settlement grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its strategic location as a crossing point for wagon roadways between Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1819, Goodlett erected a gristmill on the banks of the Cumberland River. By 1830, Goodlett had developed several other businesses including a store, bakery and hotel; he also built two houses near where present-day Third Avenue and Main Street stand. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Goodlettsville served as an important Confederate garrison town northwest of Nashville while remnants of Union forces were besieging that city from 1863 to 1865. Afterward, many residents returned to their former homes in nearby towns such as Shelbyville or Murfreesboro before moving into new ones during Reconstruction (1868-1877). During this time period, good mills continued to be built along with other businesses such as gristmills and breweries throughout Knox County; these establishments soon gave rise to names such as "the Steel City" and "the Cotton City." Business prosperity declined after World War II but has since revived thanks to both tourism opportunities available within driving distance of Goodlettsville as well as increasing development around it over recent decades.
