Goodlettsville was once a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. It became an important coffee center due to its natural resources and its location within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas. Goodlettsville's coffee history begins with the arrival of German settlers in the early 1800s. They began Farming and Coffee business in the area. By 1830, they had built a large plantation called "Nelson". The Nelson family continued to run their business until it was bought by George Peabody in 1853. Peabody renamed the plantation Goodlettsville Plantation after his father, General John Goodlett (1768-1847), who had fought for independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution. From 1853-1875, Goodletttville was run by two families: The McNaughtons and the Rankins. In 1875, Jeptha Rankin bought the plantation and changed it into a coffee cooperative known as Rankin & Sons Coffee Company. From 1907-1912, Harry Dickson ran Rankin & Sons Coffee Company from his home in Goodlettsville. During World War I (1914-1918),Rankin helped smuggle coffee beans across US borders to avoid prohibitionists' restrictions on trade with Europe Rankin & Sons Coffee Company continued operation through World War II (1939-1945). They produced over 1 million pounds of coffee each year during that time period
Goodlettsville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Goodlettsville is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Goodlettsville was Major John Cooke in 1796. Cooke named the settlement after General James goode, an officer in Captain David Rivest's brigade who fought against British forces at the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 15, 1794. Goodlettsville was platted in 1802 by James Hardin and his son-in-law Jesse Chilton. The citizens voted on December 20, 1802 to name their town after General Andrew Jackson. Jackson had been president when Goodletttsville was founded and he had come through the area twice before during his military career as a general. On February 4, 1804, Jackson approved the original plat for Goodlettvsville which Included a square lot on Main Street and two lots on Elmira Pike which later became known as Broadway Avenue A store was built on Main Street in 1806 by Nicholas Hancey and it remains open today as Hancey's Hardware Company . In 1809 Joseph Hooker arrived from Kentucky with his family and set up shop in what is now called "Hooker House". He soon realized that farming would be More important than logging so he retired from farming but continued to live there until his death in 1840 . In 1814–15 Daniel Boone made an exploratory trip down South Fork Cumberland River and spied a branch of the Tennessee River coming out of Arkansas near where GoodlettsVILLE stands today Boone decided to make this river his main trail northward rather then continue downriver all the way to Canada This decision led to some very difficult times for him since no one wanted access to this valuable land so Boone sold most of his holdings back east but kept title toMAPLETOWN Creek because he felt that if he could get possession of this creek then he could control much more land south of Chattanooga

Goodlettsville has been home to a number of notable people over its history: James Wilkinson, who founded the city; George Washington Carver; and Florence Carver McNutt II, daughter of Florence Ladd McNutt, who became president of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University).

The Wilkinson family also donated the land for what is now the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In 1836, Goodlettsville became a county seat after being chosen by the legislature over Knoxville.
