Goodlettsville was founded in 1872 as an agricultural community on the Cumberland Plateau. By 1907, Goodlettsville had become an important military airfield and research center for aircraft development. The city was renamed after General James A. Marshall in 1945 in recognition of his role in Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. Goodlettville's economy has grown since then to include manufacturing and retail sectors, with a focus on aerospace products and services.

Goodlettsville was founded in 1796 by James Goodlett and his wife Betsy. The Goodlets were one of the early families to settle in Tennessee. James Goodlett was a signer of the United States Constitution. He also served as a justice of the peace for Williamson County, Kentucky from 1799 to 1807. In 1807, he moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee and became an Associate Justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court. He died in 1841. His wife Betsy continued to live in Goodlettsville until her death in 1853.
