During prohibition, the Coffee House became an underground speakeasy where Tennesseeans could gather and drink their favorite brands of coffee under the watchful eye of state officials. After prohibition ended, the Coffee House reopened as a hangout for artists and young people alike. However, due to its popularity among these groups, it soon fell victim to gentrification and closed again in the early 2000s. Germantown is a town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Germantown is located on the Cumberland River and includes the entire business district of downtown Germantown. It began as a hamlet on the site of present-day Germantown in 1799, when Nicholas Georges built a cabin there. The first store opened in 1812. The major businesses in Germantown include KFC, JB Hi-Fi, Lululemon Athletica, Sears and Roebuck Companies, Googleplex Drive In Casino and National Amusement Company (now Six Flags Over Georgia). Germantown was established as a town in 1907 by merger of several hamlets within Robertson County. The towns of Brentwood (founded 1819), Point Pleasant (1864), Williamson (1869), Clarksville (1882), West Lebanon (1907) and Easton Township all merged to form Germantown. Most of the original buildings from these towns remain standing today including the courthouse which still stands; it was built between 1903 and 1905 by architect George Gibbs with an Italianate design inspired by Gothic cathedrals such as Notre Dame de Paris. Other remaining structures from these towns include Baptist church(s), Lutheran church(s), post office(s) and schoolhouse(s). According to the 2000 census data, there were 1,927 people living in Germantown with a total population density of 591 residents per square mile. This makes Germantown one of Tennessee's smallest towns by land area but it has more than two dozen stores and restaurants along its main drag which stretches across six blocks long – making it one of Metro Nashville's most active shopping districts
