The United States Army has always been a presence in Germantown, Tennessee. From the early days of the American Revolution when General George Washington deployed his forces to fight for independence, until today, the military has been a major part of the community's culture and history. In 1824, Colonel John Brownell organized the first Volunteer Infantry Regiment in Germantown. The regiment served during the Mexican-American War and was disbanded in 1846. In 1865, General James K. Polk activated an all-volunteer brigade called "Germantown Brigade" under command of Major General Andrew Jackson to help suppress Confederate guerrilla operations in Tennessee. The brigade was disbanded after two months due to lack of volunteers. After the Civil War ended, many soldiers from both armies returned home and began Reconstruction efforts in Tennessee. One such soldier was Major General Averell Harriman who arrived in Germantown in late 1865 to lead reconstruction efforts there. Harriman soon realized that volunteer units were not available to assist with reconstruction efforts so he formed a regular army unit called "7th Cavalry Regiment." The regiment served throughout Reconstruction and played an important role in pacification efforts following the war. In 1902, 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry Regiment became known as Company E (2nd US Armored Infantry) when it joined First World War veteran George Armstrong Custer's 3rd U S Cavalry Regiment at Fort Knox Kentucky as part of Operation Market Garden . During World War II, Germantown experienced significant growth as families moved into its neighborhoods for jobs or resettlement after the war brought about increased population density across much of Memphis metropolitan area. Many servicemen from various units stationed here - including tanks and fighter planes - fought during World War II as part of combat campaigns around Japan and Europe. After World War II ended, many servicemen left town for different reasons such as retirement or education; however, some remained until they died or retired from service within five years of their discharge date while others waited up to 25 years before leaving town entirely. By 1971, only one percent of residents still lived within city limits while over 90% resided outside them within Memphis metropolitan area.; The influx of people changedulture patterns which resulted in increased crime rates among residential areas adjacent to downtown; however these crimes decreased once gun control laws were put into place following Columbine High School shootings on April 20th 1999 by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris%. Germantown is a small town in Middle Tennessee, United States located on the Cumberland River. The population was 3,642 at the 2010 census. Germantown is part of the Memphis–TRI-Tonal Areas Combined Statistical Area. Germantown was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1796 and became a town in 1853. The current community was built around the former Gadsden Arsenal, which served as a munitions depot and arsenal from 1815 to 1865. Germantown has been consistently one of the fastest-growing communities in Tennessee since its establishment, with an average growth rate of 5% between 2000 and 2010. The history of Germantown goes back to 1796 when Scots-Irish immigrants arrived in what is now Middle Tennessee looking for new opportunities. They named their land "Germantown," after their homeland County Antrim,Ireland where they had settled before fleeing religious persecution there during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. By 1853, most of what is today Germantown had been settled and it became a town that year when General Andrew Jackson accepted it as his territory upon his victory over Native American chief Tecumseh at Pea Ridge battlefield near Nashville. Today's GermantOWN takes its name from two early settlers: John Neely and Isaac Latta who both came to America soon after independence from Great Britain (1776). Neely purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) alongriver north of present day GermANTOWN from Captain David Butler in 1800; Latta also bought 640 acres (250 hectares) alongriver northof present day GermANTOWN in 1800/1 However, these were not contiguous parcels until after canal construction cut them off at right angles – thus creating today's six blocks long Main Street corridor running NW - SE - SW - NW - NE cornering river bluff overlooking river below As cotton cultivation increased throughout the antebellum period, families began arriving from Georgia and other slave states seeking opportunity and escape from plantation life. Many Germans also migrated to this area during this time including Johann Gottlieb Baer; he purchased 1 acre (40 m²) near present day South First Baptist Church on courthouse square in 1819/20 Bayer established himself as one of the leading flour merchants in Shelbyville before moving to visit friends across country for several years but returned home to start another bakery company here about 1830 or so Evangelicals first started coming here about 1840 when Reverend John White organized a group called Ulster Society for Home Missionary Work among German farmers living east of Lebanon Road Travelers Aid Societies were established soon thereafter offering food assistance while churches were preached by itinerants such as White In 1850 Englishman Benjamin Banneker erected wood frame building known as Bannekers Store on now Elm Street opposite courthouse square . He later sold store operation to Pemberton & Company who used it as their headquarters until 1914 . Germantown is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,594 at the 2010 census. Germantown is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. It began as a cattle ranch and later became a center for commerce and culture in what is now Davidson County. The first settlers to Germantown were American Revolutionary War veterans who arrived from Virginia in 1794. They founded Germantown Academy which still operates today as an educational institution with campuses in Memphis and Nashville. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down the academy buildings, but this did not deter the townspeople from continued development; they built a new academy building that still stands today. In 1824, German immigrants arrived in what is now Germantown and started to settle there. The first generation of Germans had their own Lutheran church which remains active to this day. After several years of settlement, many of these Germans moved out to start new lives elsewhere in Tennessee or Kentucky due to harsh winters and harsh living conditions back home. However, some German immigrants stayed behind and founded another Lutheran church which still exists today: Christ Church Grammar School (now known as Westminster Presbyterian School). During World War II, Germantown was one of five towns within striking distance of Memphis that received military training camps set up by General George Patton to prepare Allied soldiers for battle against Nazi Germany. Many people from Germantown served during World War II including two members of Congress: John Lewis (D-Alamosa) and Claudine Pickett (D-Franklin).[1]
