Germantown is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis- Nashville- based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Germantown was founded in 1796 as a Methodist church and has been home to many famous figures including Andrew Jackson and Billie Jean King. Germantown is located on the Cumberland River north ofMemphis. The river flows through the town and forms its eastern border with Whitehaven Cemetery. According to the 2010 census, Germantown has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. The town was selected as one of twelve finalists for the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 because it contains "significant examples" of Federal architecture from the 19th century, including presidential libraries and government buildings such as Post Office Square. The first settler in Germantown was James Robertson who arrived in 1796 from Scotland.

Germantown is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Germantown is one of the oldest towns in Tennessee and has been settled since before the American Revolution. Germantown was first known as "Henderson". In 1795, Henderson's Creek ran through what is now Germantown and made it an ideal location for a military post because it was close to two rivers and had access to forests for hunting and gathering. The Post Office was established in 1795, and by 1811, there were more than 20 buildings in Germantown. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Gaines Mill to nearby Murfreesboro after victory over Napoleon at New Orleans gave him control of all Louisiana Territory west of Mexico City. He named the new post Fort Donelson on February 12th of that year in honor of Major-General John Donelson who had commandeered Jackson's artillery during their previous engagement at Baton Rouge two months earlier. By December 1814, Jackson had renamed Germantown "Fort Donelson" too – giving it its present name – because he wanted to emphasize its strategic importance within the Nashville area for defense against British forces operating in Kentucky across the river from Manchester (now Nashville). In 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg unsuccessfully attempted to march on downtown Nashville during Operation Crossroads as part of his general assault on Union forces defending Louisville near Fort Donelson National Cemetery. After Confederate troops failed to capture or destroy Fort Donelson National Monument (later renamed Veterans Memorial Park) they turned their attention towards downtown Nashville which they captured on April 9th 1865 following a three-day battle under high pressure conditions with little food or water available for both sides. As a result of these battles and others fought throughout Davidson County during the Civil War, many homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged including much of what still stands today within Downtown GermantOWN! Germantown was founded in 1796 by General Alexander Hamilton as a trading post on the Cumberland River. In recent decades, Germantown has seen decline as a tourist destination and has lost momentum in terms of economic development.
