The Germantown Coffee Company was founded in 1887 by Sidney Earle and his partner, George W. Bosworth. The company began operations with a small roastery on the edge of Germantown. In 1909, the company moved its main roasting lab to an existing building on Third Street in Germantown. In 1912, the company acquired a controlling interest in Roaring Fork Coffee Company. In 1916, the company merged with Bob's Coffee Company and became known as Bob's German-American Coffee Corporation. In 1921, the name was changed to the Bob's Brewery Coffee Corporation and in 1929 it merged with Humble Oil & Gas Corporation to become Humble Brewing Company. In 1954, Humble Brewing Company purchased the East Tennessee Brewery from D&CPharmaceuticals Incorporated for $5 million dollars. After purchasing East Tennessee Brewery, Humble Brewing renamed itself "Tennessee Breweries" and continued manufacturing coffee products under that name until 1971 when it merged into Gulfstream Paper Products Incorporated and ceased production of coffee products.
Germantown is an incorporated town in Cumberland County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Germantown was John Sevier who built a log cabin on a hill in 1796. Sevier named his land "Germantown" after his family's ancestral home in England. The first store and post office were built in Germantown between 1827 and 1830 by Daniel McFarlane and James Middleton. In 1837, General Andrew Johnson moved from Knoxville to take up residence in Germantown with his family. He appointed two local men as commissioners to manage the new community—George Stephenson and Benjamin Butler—which led to its growth over time. By 1840, the town had a schoolhouse, jail, church, stores and more than 50 homes. In 1861 when Tennessee became a Confederate state during the American Civil War, many of Germantown's residents sided with the Confederacy; however, most of the town's businesses reopened shortly afterwards. After Sherman's march through Tennessee on April 9th 1865®, many people returned to their homes; however, some remained behind to rebuild what was left of their communities†† following combat damage done by Union forces during that campaign*. In 1870-71*, germantswn experienced rapid growth due to influx of white settlers from surrounding counties*†† *.During Reconstruction Period (1868-1877), much work was done to improve water supply and sewerage systems which served large areas of central TN*†‡ *. Germantown is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. Germantown is located in the Cumberland Plateau area of Tennessee and straddles the borders of Kentucky and Virginia. The first European to visit what is now Germantown was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1768. Cook's journal entries mention "a great Quantity of Rice" which he found "in a Valley near by." In 1796, General Andrew Jackson arrived at Memphis from New Orleans with an army after defeating a British force at Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He ordered General Tryon to march through Germantown on his way to Nashville. Tryon's column passed through Germantown on its way north and east, but no one seems to have known about it until 1819 when Colonel John Sevier reported seeing "a large cotton plantation built by my ancestor James Sevier." This must be where you find what is now called America's oldest cotton gin - erected by General John Sevier in 1819 just south of present day Interstate 40 across from Holmes Hall High School - also one of the earliest public schools in Germantown. In 1818, Nicholas Veatch founded Veatch & Company hereabouts, one of the most important mercantsile families in early Tennessee history. Nicholas had come overlanders as part of Commodore John Hawkins' expedition against Spain during the Spanish–American War (1898). Afterward he settled down and started a family hereabouts and continued this enterprise for many years until it went bankrupt in 1907; however he never lost any sleep over it since there were plenty of other ways to make money then than selling goods door-to-door! In that same year (1898), pioneer African American Methodist minister Drayton Wylie moved from Cookeville to live hereabouts with his wife Martha Jane Smith Wylie; they later became known as 'Wanda' or 'Drayton'. Mrs. Wylie played an important role not only as preacher but also as mother figure unto her children who were Acadian refugees who had fled Louisiana during Hurricane Joe (Cumberland County Fairgrounds Aug 25th 1895). Their home was used for several years as temporary jail before being replaced by Court House #2 located opposite current day Blount Street across from Holmes Hall High School - eventually becoming Union Station! There are still some descendants living there today - many descended from Drayton Wylie’s sister “Wanda” who married white Southerner Lewis Hillyer Sr., head tenant farmer uponVEATCH & Co.'s purchase thereof from LEE FAMILY circa 1910 !!! One thing for sure – those homesickAcadian kids will always love going back HOME !!! Many people might say that our town got its start because Jerry Dawson opened up Hermitage Drive – well actually that didn't happen until 1915 when GEORGE DAVIDSON purchased Lots 1 thru 3 lying southeast corner Of Hermitage Road And East Second Street From JEFFERY HAMLIN !!! George Davison was wellknown locally & nationally for being an entrepreneur (& real estate developer) !!! So if you're thinking about moving here – just remember that ol' George got things started !
Germantown was founded in 1795 by James Robertson and his family. The town grew quickly, and by 1815 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1865, the Union Army burned Germantown during the Battle of Germantown Heights. In the late 1800s, Germantown became a popular community for African American residents. A large black church called First Baptist Church was built in 1903 in what is now the heart of the town. In 1916, the United States Supreme Court upheld segregated voting rights in Memphis as part of its decision "Brown v. Board of Education". This event helped to spur integration within Germantown. The town established itself as an agricultural center after World War II began to boom in Tennessee. In 1954, Germantown became an important node in the Birmingham–Ft Worth metropolitan area when it merged with neighboring Jefferson County to form that region's first municipal government.
