Gallatin is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gallatin was founded by General Andrew Jackson in 1792 as a trading post on the Gallatin River. The name "Gallatin" comes from French and means "bank of the falls." In 1802, General John C. Fremont established what is now University Station here, giving rise to the name "University Town". The first school in Gallatin was built in 1800 by teacher Shadrack Bullock and students from nearby Williamson County schools. From 1806-1810, Methodist Reverend Samuel Gregg taught classes here before moving to Nashville to open a school there. In 1815-1816, Presbyterian Reverend John Siddle served as headmaster of the new school until his death; his pupils later organized into a church congregation that he had helped found. In 1825-1826, David Fenton erected an adobe courthouse and jail near what is now downtown (now called Fenton Square). The first judge of probate in Johnson County was appointed here in 1830 by then-Governor James Kenedy; he also served as justice of peace for several years. The following year saw another milestone when locomotive engineers George Stephenson and Robert Stephenson constructed the first railroad line east of Rocky Mountains through this area – connecting Memphis with Chattanooga via Uniontown (later Knoxville) – making it possible for settlers to travel southward for goods and services unavailable upriver or overland. In 1840–41 (the date sometimes given for when Taylor's Mill became operational), Andrew O'Neal founded a mill on White Deer Creek adjacent to present day Gallatin Square; it remains one of only two such mills still operating in Tennessee today! In 1848–49 (the date often given for when stores began opening up along Main Street), Baptist preacher Wiley Booth opened First Baptist Church which would become one of the most important churches in downtown Knoxville – serving both religious and social needs until 1870! This early wooden building still stands today on Main Street just north of where it once stood! When Yellow Fever swept thru central Tennessee during those years, many people turned to Methodism rather than join Seventh Day Adventists who were then struggling against Spanish flu pandemic conditions back home! Some Baptists did manage to get their stricken congregations together however & formed Cedar Hill Baptist Church soon afterwards which still serves today as one of Knoxville’s largest churches! During much OF THE 20th century things changed slowly here due mainly to lack(of interest) FROM OUR COMMUNITY/STATES DOWN SOUTHWEST THEN UP NORTHWEST COAST AFTER THAT TIME SOMEONE STARTED TO BUILD A MALL HERE AGAIN BUT IT STOPPED AS WE ALL KNOW THERE WAS VERY LITTLE INTEREST IN THIS AREA NOW

The community of Gallatin was founded in 1814 by Andrew Jackson and his family. In 1840, the town of Gallatin became a county seat of Butts County. The population of Gallatin grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching a peak of more than 10,000 in 1860. However, the population declined during the 20th century due to various factors including industry and migration to other areas.
