It was founded by John Sevier in 1796. In 1819, it became part of the Cherokee Nation and then again became an independent country within the United States in 1830. The first courthouse in Gallatin was built in 1824. The economy of Gallatin is based primarily on agriculture and ranching. Gallatin is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1819 by John Gallatin and named for him. It became a county seat in 1836. The first store inGallatin was built on the corner of High and Cherry Streets in 1819 by John Gallatin and his brother-in-law David Ritchie. A post office called Gallatin was established in 1825, and remained open until it closed in 1906. In 1830, Colonel James Kensey moved his family from Tennessee to this area. He acquired 640 acres (248 hectares) of land here where he built what is now known as Kensey's farmstead on the banks of the Cumberland River. Kensey served as commissioner of education for Knox County from 1830 to 1840; he also helped found the college here that bears his name: Knoxville University (now Vanderbilt University). The first school building at what is now Gallatin was erected about 1795 by Reverend Samuel Morse and Drury Lane School District #2 teacher Ebenezer Farnsworth as a two-story frame house on present day High Street. In 1806, General Alexander Ross advanced $6,000 towards the purchase of land for an academy here which would become Vanderbilt University; it wasn't until 1830 that this grant actually went through! Kensey donated 7 acres (3 hectares) east of current Main Street to Nashville Presbyterian Church for use as an experimental agricultural school during much of the 19th century with various educational goals including training ministers and teachers; however, these plans never came to fruition though some students did attend classes there over time! After becoming a part ofKnox County in1836 following its creation from parts of Hardeman County,[1] Gallatin experienced rapid growth due largely to cotton plantations located near or within its borders such as those operated by Andrew Jackson’s presidential cabinet members Donelson & Blount along Iuka Road just south of town limits[2]. This plantation economy led directly to increased population density given easy access to labor throughout much of antebellum Tennessee[3], one key factor behind many elegant brick homes constructed around this period around what are today Center Street/High Street/Oakwood Avenue corridor alone[4],[5]. Cotton production continued into the 20th century with nearby businesses like Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport serving as major economic engines while residents slowly transitioned away from their rural roots towards modern lifestyle amenities like shopping malls, professional sports teams etc.; however overall industry decline has had little impact on village demographics remaining mostly rural since early 21st century although some new development has taken place recently along West Side Drive near Interstate 65 exit 5[6],[7].
Gallatin was founded in 1796 by James Robertson, who named it after his father, Gallatin County being located in the present day district of Gallatin. The first permanent settler in what is now Gallatin County was David Gentry, who arrived there in 1798. The first school was built here in 1800. By 1823, the population had grown to 103 and a courthouse was erected that year. In 1835, the town of Gallatin was platted and named for General John Cranch because he donated land for its development. The railroad reached Gallatin in 1868 and cattle drives began bringing settlers to this area beginning in the late 1800s. By 1910, there were over 1,000 people living here and a post office operated from 1911 until 1966. In 1916 an agreement was made with Nashville allowing Knoxville to annexGallatin as part of its city limits. The last resident ofGallatin passed away on July 3, 1970
