Franklin, Tennessee is located in the heart of the bellwether state of Tennessee. The city is named for General James Franklin and was founded by him in 1796. It has been a strategic location for the Navy since World War II. In November 1942, Franklin was one of five cities chosen to be site of an experimental naval air base known as NAS Memphis. NAS Memphis would later become Ford Island Naval Air Station. The first USS Nashville (AV-1) was launched from NAS Memphis on December 10, 1942 and delivered to the Navy on January 8, 1943. The first ship in the navy's "kitchen table" program insignia classifications were CVN-73 which were commissioned into service on February 3, 1943 at Norfolk Virginia under Captain Elisha Pogue MC USNR with Chief Engineer George Halsey commanding engineering team. USS Nashville (CVN-73) operated out of NAS Memphis until her decommissioning on May 15, 1945 and shelled Japanese positions off Okinawa until September 1st when she sailed back home to get underway for Pearl Harbor where she arrived on September 22nd following repairs and refurbishment period at Mare Island Naval Shipyard before becoming Flagship USS Enterprise (CVN-64) on October 12th 1944 during World War II's final days in escorting Task Group 58.7 southwestward across Japan Strait to join forces with Imperial Japanese Navy Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's Zuikaku Force at Ulithi Atoll in order to launch an assault against America's Fleet based there; this failed due to Kamikaze aircraft crashing into Enterprise while en route. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson as a stop on his trek up the mountain to join General Andrew Jackson at Hartsville in 1809. The townsfolk name their local creek, Franklin Creek, after General Wilkinson. As the first post office in Franklin was established in 1811, the name also became synonymous with that of the town itself. In 1851, Franklin accepted an offer from President Zachary Taylor to become a state capital. The town experienced significant growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its strategic location as a transportation and trade center for the region. During World War II, Franklin served as one of two major airfields within Tennessee serving Allied forces fighting in North Africa and Europe. After the war, Franklin continued to grow as a bedroom community for Knoxville until it became an independent city in 1967. Today, Franklin is home to a population of just under 2,000 residents who enjoy some of the best views within reach while still remaining close-knit communities rich with history and culture. The unique mix of old-fashioned values that has made this small town so popular has given it a strong sense of community identity that can be seen throughout its cultural attractions such as its annual music festival or its annual arts festival which features traditional art forms from all over the world. Franklin was founded by James Robertson in 1812. The city and county were named after General George Washington, who also played a significant role in its founding. The first courthouse was built in 1815. In the 1870s, Franklin began to grow rapidly as a cotton town, thanks to new transportation methods and the rise of the railroad industry. By 1914, it had become the second largest municipality in Tennessee after Nashville. In that year, it merged with Montgomery County to form the current Knox County.
