The name "Franklin" comes from the French "Frantz-l'Orléans," meaning "la Fontaine Royale." The city was founded by General Andrew Jackson on May 15, 1812 as part of the Military District of Western Tennessee and became a state capital on December 3, 1861. In 1915, it served as the capital for only nine days before becoming Nashville due to its proximity to the federal government. For over two centuries after that date, Franklin has been an important center for coffee culture in Sevier County. In 1824, John Bircher established one of the first coffee plantations in what is now Franklin. In 1865, following Confederate General Robert Ewell's raid on Knoxville that resulted in three deaths; Franklin voted to secede from Tennessee rather than become anotherる Howeverervell successfully forced them to rejoin the state during his next campaign against Union General Ulysses S Grant near Knoxville several months later By 1870, with manufacturing growth expanding throughout Chattanooga's northern corridor (aided by new transportation technologies), much economic activity took place within what are now Franklin's downtown core – including several large garment companies (such as Gingham) – until those years’ end when a series of devastating fires consumed much commerce along First Avenue between Broad Street (now Spring Hill Boulevard) and Main Street (now John F Kennedy Boulevard). Many residents lost their livelihoods during these devastating losses; however many have never forgotten or given up hope that something good could come out of such adversity Many organizations have been formed to continue memories/interest related to this time period: The Bennington-Franklin Chamber Orchestra conducts concerts throughout year at 10 different locations across town; while numerous businesses still stand side-by-side along First Avenue from where they once did business There has even been development happening right outside some old buildings which include retail space being developed adjacent to existing restaurants/ bars etcetera
