Frémont made an attempt to explore the Tennessee River valley and named it after his friend, General Alexander Hamilton. The city of Knoxville was founded in 1824 by Andrew Jackson, who named it after his mother, Rachel Jackson. In 1837, following the Battle of Nashville, Knoxville became the capital of Tennessee and a state within the United States. By 1860, over 60% of all slaves in Tennessee were living in Memphis or Chattanooga. During World War II, large numbers of soldiers from Franklin served in both Europe and Asia; many lived and worked in Franklin until their return home.
