Fremont's victory over Polk's fleet, Farragut returned to Pensacola with his ships covered in Medals of Honor and an escort of gunships under Rear Admiral Harry Wainwright. He was court-martialed for dereliction of duty but acquitted by a brigade vote; he then took up residence at Monterey on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula where he died two years later at age 74 from natural causes.
