The Confederate forces killed many civilians and burned much of the town before withdrawing. The Tennessee National Guard was re-raised on October 15, 1861 as a result of this attack and served until March 1865 when it was mustered out. After the war, the Tennessee National Guard began to disband due to lack of manpower. In 1936, however, it was reactivated again and served for another two decades until it was discontinued in 1984. The last unit to be activated in Farragut was Company C (2nd Battalion), 1st Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry on September 10, 1984. This unit lasted until its disbandment on February 1, 1990 due to budget cuts within the military brass at that time.

Farragut is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first European to visit Farragut was the Spanish captain Alonso De Santa Catalina on October 12, 1536. He named it "Fortunato" after his ship, the "Fortunata". A post office called Farragut (later shortened to "FARRAGUT") was established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. It was during the American Civil War that Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his headquarters here. Forrest's forces destroyed most of Fort Donelson and much of Chattanooga before being withdrawn to Greensboro, North Carolina on April 12, 1865. In 1894 businessman Wm Sargent bought land east of town and built what would become known as Sargent Hall which still stands today. In 1919 he sold an additional piece of land west of town for $1 million making FARRAGUT one of the most expensive towns acquisition ever made by a private individual in Tennessee history. The significant growth that took place throughout downtown during this time led to several incarnations over time including a movie theater (the A&W Theater) sports complex (including home plate at First Tennessee Park), a large department store(Sargent-Williams), two high schools (Gadsden State Teachers College - now Gadsden State University) and more than fifty homesites totaling well over 1,000 feet²). One can only imagine all that has transpired since then! Today's skyline view from downtown includes almost every major structure dating back to when it first started out as just blocks wide or less... everything from banks/loans buildings/lawyers' offices/ hospitals/ churches etc., right up until multiplexes/hotels etc., many with their own attached streetscapes! Downtown business owners have long been able to enjoy excellent citywide hiking trails right outside their doors whether exploring Vanderbilt University campus or simply taking some time for themselves...everything within easy reach!
