Farragut is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. Farragut is the county seat of Hardin County. Farragut was founded in 1847 by Colonel John Farragut and his men as a stop on their way to Chattanooga from New Orleans. It was originally called "Newburgh." In 1853, when Hardin County was organized, Farragut became its first incorporated town. The city's name comes from Commodore James K. Polk's decision to rename Mobile Bay after General Andrew Jackson in 1845 because that would help make Farragut into an important naval base for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. The first municipal building in Farragut was built in 1851 and still stands today as the city hall: it is a two-story brick structure with a basement and walls of red brick. A second municipal building replaced it in 1906 and remains standing today as the library: it is a three-story frame structure with a basement and walls of black clapboard. In 1865, General Braxton Bragg arrived at Fort Donelson with his army seeking refuge from battle after being forced to retreat from Corinth River Bridge near Nashville following Union cavalry charges that killed several hundred Confederate soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hoggsman. On July 15th, 1865, Bragg addressed a crowd of citizens gathered around what is now downtown Farragut about Fort Donelson: "You have all seen this fortifications; they are not without utility but they are also very dear to our hearts because we can never forget that within these walls were more than six thousand gallant men who died for us." The fortification served as headquarters for General Order No 4 which ordered all artillery units within striking distance of Chattanooga to open fire on any enemy forces attempting to cross the river unload or reload their weapons while supplies were available at nearby impoundments and storeshops
