The United States Army was founded in 1775, and the first U.S. military action took place in Saratoga Springs, New York on April 12, 1777. The American Revolution began with a fight for independence from Great Britain, and by 1780 the Continental Army had grown to over one million men. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered an invasion of Mexico. The Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ceded California to the United States. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina; this led to the Civil War. For two years, Union soldiers fought against Confederate troops while also trying to maintain control over all of Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1865, Union forces had captured all of Georgia and driven north into Tennessee; they were successful at achieving this goal but lost Kentucky as well as most of northern Virginia (including Washington D.C.).

The town was platted on April 15, 1861 by Alexander Farragut and James Witherspoon. It was named for Commodore John C. Farragut who fought in the American Civil War and died at sea off Jacksonville, Florida in 1865. Farragut's great-grandson Rear Admiral John C. Farragut served as Commanding Officer of USS "Hornet" during World War II and later became an executive officer with defense contractor Lockheed Martin Co., located in nearby Hamiltonville, Tennessee. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,863 people residing in the town; 627 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63% were married couples living together, 9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25% were non-families. After the war, Farragut became a military base for White County, Georgia. However, it remained an important port until 1945 when it was closed due to lack of traffic. Today, Fort Farragut remains a museum that tells the story of this pivotal battle between Union and Confederate forces
