The history of the shooting sports in Elizabethton, Tennessee dates back to the early 1800s. Prior to that, there were no formalized shooting sports leagues in this area. However, there are records of various local shootouts and tournaments taking place throughout the years. One such event was the "Gunsmoke" Shootout tournament which took place annually at a rural location near Elizabethton. The purpose of this shootout was to determine who could fire the most rounds into an opponent's property. In 1892, a new rifle range was opened in town and soon afterwards, local members formed their own shooting league for target practice and competition. This league lasted until around 1920 when it disbanded because of lack of interest from members. The first known shotgun match took place on October 1st, 1892 between two groups of men at one of the oldsync mines north of town. The object of this match was to shoot as many rounds as possible through a small metal plate attached directly to the trigger guard on an old shotgun known as a 'trigger man.' At that time, shotguns were only fired by individuals who had purchased them outright from their owners or from gunsmiths who had repaired them for them. As it turned out, these matches were very popular among locals because they allowed people to test their rifles against each other without having to worry about potentially damaging them or themselves while playing with firearms. In 1896, local youths organized a pistol match which attracted some high-quality shooters from across the state including James Buchanan and Ulysses S Grant (both future presidents). This pistol match also served as a qualifier for the annual Gunsmoke Shootout tournament which would later take place at nearby Mahan Park racetrack over Labor Day weekend. The goal of this shootout was always to win either the Pistol or Shotgun division but it is interesting to note that not all participants shot for fun; many actually came looking for sponsorship money or revenge against opponents they felt had wronged them during previous matches or tournaments! In 1903, another club formed in town specifically designed for target practice called 'Huey's Club.' Huey's Club operated out of what is now called Highland Park Shopping Center off Shelbyville Pike. At its peak membership numbered close to 100 individuals and they frequently held functions like camp meetings and competitions using everything from pistolsights up through machineguns! Many famous names associated with Virginia Beach such as Joe Meek (the founder/owner/director/starof 'Gunsmoke'), Doc Holliday ('Pistolero'), Bob Hope ('Mugshot Man') amongst others participation during Huey's days including multiple wins at Gunsmoke Shootouts along with numerous regional championships...all while practicing law! It should be noted that Huey's Club didn't actually use any real guns but rather used replica firearms made by various period manufacturers...just like today's shooters do! In 1925, another group formed within Elizabethton specifically designed for target practice called 'Shooters'. This group quickly gained some popularity due primarily to their impressive range located just east of town off Stone Road near modern day Hickory Hills Cemetery - capable seating up unto 40 people inside with plenty of room outside if needed! They also ran several tournaments featuring both handguns and shotguns each year alongside regular shootouts between individual teams consisting entirely OFTEN OF THE MEMBERS FROM SHOOTING LEAGUE CLASSIC TIMES BACK THEN!!! Needless to say given how well-known Shooter’s team became locally among residents & visitors alike,...their trophies can still often be found hanging on pegs inside their facility today! As mentioned earlier,.one major reason why Shooting has been so popular hereabouts throughout thesemany years is simply because folks have been able to experience REAL GUNS vs REPEATED GAMES OF THROWING RIFLE OR SHOTGUNS FOR FUN & COMPETITION!! Unfortunately due largely TO CHILD PROTECTION LAWS IN AMERICA TODAY ALL GUN USE BY CONSUMPTIONERS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MUST BE PROOFED TO AN ARCHIVIST BEFORE THEY MAY BE USED IN ANY FORM OF SPORTS OR TRADE !! Consequently,...most everyone involved in Shooting events below THE age Of 18 currently must obtain permission prior TO participating FROM THEIR PARENTS OR ADULT LEGISLATURE ! Even though technically legal (& much enjoyed by youngsters everywhere!), THIS MEASURES A LOSS OF CUSTOMIZATION & PARTICIPATION THAT I PERSONALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE REDEFINED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

It was originally located on the Cumberland River and was named for Elizabeth College, a female educational institution which had been founded by Reverend John C. Calhoun in 1812. The community developed around the town of Elizabethtown, also located in Knox County. During the American Civil War, Elizabethton served as a garrison town on the Confederate side of the river. The community ceased to exist after Union forces captured it from Confederate forces in 1865.
