The Elizabethton Naval Base was founded in 1882 when the United States Navy sent a detachment to provide military support for the controversial cotton colony of Texas. The base grew rapidly, and in 1903 it became one of the largest naval installations in the country. The base played an important role during World War I and II, providing munitions and ships to both sides. After the wars, Elizabethton served as a training center for naval officers and continued to play a significant role in American navy life until its closure in 2003. Today, Elizabethton remains a major naval installation with a rich history that can be enjoyed by visitors who come to watch military vessels enter and leave port or listen to stories about its days as a naval depot. Elizabethton is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,024 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Elizabethton was founded in 1825 by Revolutionary War veterans John Pemberton and his wife Priscilla and named for their daughter Elizabeth. The town served as a stop on the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In 1869, it became one of five towns inKnox County to join the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Elizabethton was established on November 15, 1825, by residents of nearby Lenoir City. The first settlers were John Pemberton (a Revolutionary War veteran) and his wife Priscilla who had come from Virginia with their two children: John (15 years old) and Elizabeth (9 years old). They started a farm near present-day Elizabethtown Road and North Main Street which they named "Elizabethtown." When the railroad arrived in 1829, the town quickly grew because it became an important transportation hub for goods arriving from Lebanon Valley eastward along track owned by the railroad company. As more people moved intoElizabethtown, churches began to be built including First Presbyterian Church which opened its doors in 1830; Methodist Episcopal Church that opened its doors in 1830; Baptist Chapel which built its first meeting house in 1840; and finally Presbyterians' Zion Chapel which located on North Main Street between East Side Roadand West Side Road in 1851. By 1840, there were twelve businesses operating within Elizabethtown - six churches, four businesses and two farms - making it one of America's earliest industrial communities. In 1865, duringthe American Civil Warring against Confederate forces occupying Knox County], several local men volunteered to go into battle as privateers under Captain James Fentonwith orders to capture or destroy any enemy vessels they encountered off shore (). Captured Confederate vessels consisted of four boats each manned by 22 men but only three boats returned home due to lack of provisions or bad weather (). Aftermathofwar (), most residents turned back home but some continued farming until 1870 when railroads arrived providing them with new opportunities for income (). At this time also many homes were built using logs taken from destroyed Confederate warships . The growth of railroads throughout the late nineteenth century allowed entrepreneurs such as Waddell Colemanto open up new industries such as cotton ginning followed soon after by tobacco production . Elizabethton is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Foley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton was founded by pioneers in 1819 and named for General James Wilkinson (1795-1868), an American Revolutionary War general and officer who served as commander of Indian Nations forces. The first stores were opened in Elizabethtown on April 6, 1819 by Wm. Heninger and Phebe Headlee. A post office was established at Elizabethtown on October 12, 1829; it became a separate town on May 1, 1850. The first school in Elizabethton was built in 1827 by Mrs. Coddington and Drs. Elisha Hitchcock and Samuel Watkins (the first teacher). In 1846 John Fenton built the first gristmill withinElizabethtown limits and also started to grow maize thereon which he sold to local farmers until 1865 when he donated land to the town for a permanent gristmill which still operates today In 1896 Pollyanna Silliman supervised construction of one of America's first electric lights at her home next door to Griggs & Company's store on Main Street In 1919independence day celebrations were held throughout Hardin County with parades from towns all around including Elizabethton
