The town was founded on land purchased from the Cherokees by John Lennon and his father in 1812. At that time, it was one of the most remote settlements in Tennessee. After years of hard work and determination, Elizabethton became one of the largest cotton towns in America by 1800. In 1827, when Colonel James Fenton acquired all of Williamson County from the Cherokee Nation, he announced that he would make Elizabethton "the first capital city of this new country." In order to secure this title, Fenton built a large courthouse and erected many impressive buildings within the town limits – such aspublic baths and a schoolhouse – which remain standing to this day. Fenton also donated land for a hospital which still stands today (now called William Tatum Hospital) and established an agricultural college which educated Tennessean farmers until well into the 20th century. This success helped contribute to Elizabethton's nickname "The Cotton Capital of America."
