Elizabethton is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Elizabethton was founded in 1803 by Scots-Irish settlers who named it for a freshwater lake that they found near their farmstead. The community developed around a Methodist Episcopal Church and three stores which operated until 1830. In 1831, the first school building was erected. A Baptist church followed in 1833 and a post office was established in 1840. By 1860, there were six churches and seventy businesses in Elizabethton. The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1865 and soon after, the number of businesses increased to ninety-five. Elizabethton declined during the mid-19th century as cotton production shifted from agriculture to milling and manufacturing; however, its economy recovered during World War II when local manufacturers produced munitions for the war effort. Afterward,Elizabethton began to decline again as development took place outside of its boundaries; however, it has slowly regained some prosperity over recent years with growth in arts and culture along with an increase in business activity within its limits
In 1801, the area that is now Elizabethton was part of the Creek Nation. The Cherokees were forced out of their homes in what is now Georgia in 1795, and they settled on the Tennessee side of the Cumberland River. In 1800, General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States, and he ordered all Native Americans to leave Tennessee. The Cherokees started a rebellion against Jackson, and by 1804 they had been driven out of Tennessee.
