The Elizabethton Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1892 and serves as the first volunteer fire department in Williamson County. The community was named for Elizabeth Brougham (1824-1910), an American women's rights advocate who died in 1910. Brougham had been instrumental in helping to form the National Women's Party and helped to campaign against then-President James Buchanan on behalf of women's rights. The Elizabethton post office opened in 1892 and continued operation until it was discontinued by USPS in 1960. The community has a public school system with six campuses: elementary through high school; middle school; portable schools; and adult education/vocational training programs. One of the most notable people from Elizabethton is musician Jerry Lee Lewis who grew up there and went on to become one of the biggest stars of his era. Elizabethton is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro-Franklin, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton has two small hospitals and one multi-purpose park. The town was founded in 1837 by Scots-Irish settlers from Belfast, Ireland who were driven out of their homes during the Great Famine of Ireland. They named their new community Elizabethton after Queen Elizabeth I of England. The first store and post office opened in 1838 in what is now downtown Elizabethton. In 1840, the railroad arrived, changing the course of history for Elizabethton as it became an important stop on travelers traveling to Chattanooga and other parts of north Georgia and northeast Alabama. Families began growing corn and wheat crops while working on nearby plantations; these crops supplemented meager food supplies brought overland from Scotland by wagon trainloads each year. By 1860, more than 60% of the population were farmers with some form of agriculture involved in their lives; this sector remains important toElizabethton today. In 1861, nightmarish fires destroyed much of downtown Elizabethton but did not reach the original Irish settlement which remained intact thanks to a valiant effort by local residents to save treasure stored inside buildings that miraculously survived! In 1868 when Tennessee passed a state law providing for voting rights for African Americans (the first such law in America), ElizabethTON voted overwhelmingly against passage – 814 to 4!
