Elizabethton is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Davidson metropolitan area. The village of Elizabethton was founded in 1838 by Methodist missionaries on land that now includes the city of Chattanooga. The name " Elizabethton" comes from an English name for a small pond near the town site. The first post office in Elizabethton was established in 1840. A store and blacksmith shop were built in 1851 and 1861, respectively. In 1865, a school opened and remained open until 1971; it was then replaced by Trenton Elementary School which became known as Elizabethton Middle School after being built on land donated by Mrs. Titchborne (the current public school superintendent). In 1906, heavy rains led to extensive flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in the community including a church and several schools; however, no one was killed as a result of the floods. In 1912-13, numerous storms caused widespread damage across much of Tennessee including flash flooding that destroyed dozens of homes and business; however, people were not killed as a result of these storms either. In 1954-55 during reconstruction following World War II due to bombings throughout the region resulting in extensive damage both physical and infrastructure within Knox County such as dams along I-24 & US 41 bridges had to be rebuilt costing $5 million dollars with most residents having to leave their homes rural areas near Nashville where they could have access to education but could not live without fear of bombing raids or other natural disasters happening any time there wasn't significant construction going on . Elizabethton saw its share some Of This largescale rebuilding projects taking place right here while others took place out west or far away like Lookout Mountain Preserve which has been largely unchanged since before anyone even knows about it

Elizabethton is a small town in the Sevier County, Tennessee area and was founded in 1819. The community was named for Elizabeth, the wife of Colonel John C. Elizabeth served as a justice of the peace and postmaster at the town's founding. At its peak it had a population of around 150 people and was home to a grocery store, several schools, two churches, and two newspapers. In 1865, after Union troops marched through the town on their way to Gettysburg, Elizabethton surrendered to Confederate General Robert Ewell and most of its residents were taken prisoner or killed. By 1870 there were only ten people living in the community and it had fallen into disrepair since then. In 1892 it was renamed for General James K. Polk after his donation of $5 to help rebuild abandoned towns in southeastern Tennessee during the Panic of 1893. In recent yearsElizabethton has seen some resurgence with efforts being made to localize its economy such as developing an agricultural sector and increasing tourism opportunities; however, much work still needs to be done before Elizabethton can become another successful small town within Tennessee's history. One major accomplishment that has been made recently is the restoration of one half-timbered house which overlooks Main Street from whichSeveral concerts have been held annually showcasing local talent while also giving residents an opportunity to meet new friends
On April 12, 1796, the General Court of Elizabethton approved a petition for incorporation and on October 9th, 1796 the town was organized. In 1819, the General Assembly passed an act to name the town after Major-General James Wilkinson who fought in the Mexican War. The town continued to grow and by 1870 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1902, a new school building was built inElizabethton and it served as the town's primary school until 1954 when it was replaced by Central High School. In 1907-08, Elizabethton erected a steel girder bridge over Little Tennessee River which became known as the "ElizabethTON Bridge". The bridge carried U.S. Route 68 across the river and is now used as part of County Road E7 between Elizabethton and Antioch. The townsfolk voted to erect a monument to former president Andrew Johnson in 1922 at his home in Chattanooga with $1,000 raised from local businesses.
