The first mention of East Ridge comes from Native American oral history which recounts an event that took place in 1862 when General Andrew Johnson was elected president. When he received his instructions from Washington, D.C., Johnson ordered all military forces to march towards Chattanooga and sack it. This order caused a rift between General Nathan Bedford Forrest and President Johnson because Forrest believed that he would be given command of these forces if he reached Chattanooga first. In response to this issue, President Johnson sent Forrest's subordinate, William Trousdale Harrison, to take over control of the army's march on Chattanooga and Sack it instead. This move saved East Ridge from being sacked by the Union army and allowed for the town to continue functioning as a small community for many years afterwards.

East Ridge is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 953 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 when the railroad extension fromMemphis to Shelbyville was built through Knox County. East Ridge had a post office from 1902 until 1951. In 1953, it became an incorporated municipality with its own government and courts. In 1988, East Ridge voters approved a resolution to rename the community for General George Custer because of his legacy as an American hero and defender of civilization against Indians in the Indian Wars era. Today, East Ridge retains its traditional agriculture and ranching economy with a tiny amount of manufacturing or service sector activity; though there are now two businesses providing general grocery shopping in town: One run by Hometown Grocery Co., which opened in 1992, and another by Crossroads Checkershooting & Fishing., which arrived in 2001 after being founded in 1999 by two local men who also ran a pawnshop on Main Street. "For centuries," wrote historian Don Graves "East Ridge has been one of America’s most isolated towns." And that isolation has continued even as more people have moved into nearby cities over the past few decades - so much so that Eastridge's only store remains unchanged since it first opened: Hometown Grocery Co., which has since closed but continues to serve as a landmark on Main Street today (though it no longer sells anything). But despite their lack of physical commerce, these small-town residents still rely heavily on social services provided by churches and benevolent organizations like Rotary International - all while keeping upeton traditions like football (the town's teams are known as "Riders"), selling handmade pies ("Pies 'N' Thins"), playing poker at The Nugget Casino (owned by Pinnacle Entertainment Group),building snowshoes (a tradition started when one resident got married outside the courthouse) or hosting snowball fights during warmups at training camp - something they do every winter!
