The East Ridge National Guard was first organized in 1917. The guard has been a part of the United States government since that time and has played a significant role in our history. Today, the East Ridge National Guard is one of the most decorated units in the United States Military. The unit was originally called the Volunteer Infantry Regiment and served during World War I as an infantry battalion. In 1919, they were redesignated as the 3rd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment and fought in the Mexican Revolution. Afterward, they returned to service during World War II as an infantry regiment. In 1951, the guard was re-designated as the 5th Infantry Division and served in Korea before being sent back to Europe to fight in NATO's Cold War era. In 1991, they were again re-designated as the 5th Infantry Division and deployed to Desert Storm where they played a significant role in achieving victory over Iraq. Today, they are still stationed at homebase near East Ridge, TN alongside other US military units

East Ridge was a small town in Henderson County, Tennessee, United States, located on the eastern edge of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The population was 5,527 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Knoxville. The community began as a farming village on high ground overlooking the confluence of East Fork and Arkansas Rivers. By 1868 it had grown to include a store and two churches. In 1892 East Ridge had a school and post office with a population of about 150. In 1916 East Ridge became an incorporated city after being rejected by Henderson County for lack of business opportunity and city government revenues. The first mayor was A.C. Whitehurst; later mayors were William Hines (1930-1932), Harry Siever (1948-1951), Clyde Creswick (1965-1968), and Jerry Witherspoon (1981-1983). After its incorporation, East Ridge lost much of its growth potential due to prohibition and other economic issues in the 1920s and 1930s; however, it regained some prosperity in the late 1940s when energy production increased in nearby Knoxville. During World War II, East Ridge served as an airfield for Japanese forces during Operation "Torch" which aimed to cross the Tennessee River into northern Kentucky across Sherman Dam property Lines without surrendering any American troops or equipment.
