East Ridge is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,657 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. East Ridge is located on the eastern edge of Hardin County and forms part of the larger Knoxville–Chattanooga Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in what became East Ridge was John Denton in 1827. He named his land "East Ridge" after one of his brothers who had been killed in a hunting expedition two years earlier. The first store built in East Ridge was owned and operated by Johnnie Hillman from 1839 to 1843. From 1840 to 1861, it was run by James Hogg from a log cabin he constructed on his plantation about two miles east of present-day East Ridge. By 1865, it had become an all-black community with nine stores and three blacksmiths operating out of four businesses within one mile of each other. In 1892, General Edward Johnston founded theKnoxville Rifles Regiment (later known as US Cavalry) here with some men he had recruited from around the state into his cavalry unit during the Mexican War. At that time, Knoxville's business district included much of what is now East Ridge including today's downtown areas as well as parts of waste ground between High Street and Church Road which are still used for agricultural purposes today because they have no access to water or sewer systems. Colonel John Silliman also served as commanding officer here during this time period before becoming Commanding General Confederate Forces in North Carolina during Reconstruction era followingthe end of the Civil War In 1907 there were six stores open within one mile each for residents living within easy walking distance of either High or Church Streets; ten years later only two businesses remained open within onemile each but today all six businesses are extant inside Downtown Knoxville limits . In 1950 there were twenty five stores open within one mile each but only five remain extant currently . In 1960 there were seventy seven stores open within one mile each but only thirty four remain extant currently . Today most inhabitants live close to their jobs providing easy access to shopping options despite limited transportation infrastructure

It lies on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau and is adjacent to the towns of Lebanon and Lookout Mountain. The first Europeans to land in what is now East Ridge were fur traders working for the North Western Company. They discovered coal seams in 1819 and began extracting it soon after. In 1821, a post office was established at East Ridge; it remained in operation until 1906. In 1861, during the American Civil War, East Ridge sided with Confederate forces against Union forces. After the war ended, many soldiers from East Ridge served in various units throughoutTennessee and Virginia as part of General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Army of Tennessee. Some residents of East Ridge returned home after the war; others moved to other nearby settlements such as Lebanon or Lookout Mountain where they started new families. Today, much of what used to be called "East ridge" has been developed into larger communities such as Lebanon and Lookout Mountain while smaller portions still remain rural with a strong traditional culture that dates back to pioneer days. There are several churches located within Easy Street Baptist Church which is one of few remaining historic black churches in Knox County today (the other being Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Zion).
