East Ridge is a small town in Middle Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Foley Metropolitan Statistical Area. East Ridge is located on the Susquehanna River and straddles the border of Greene County and Pickett County. The first people to live in what is now East Ridge were Native Americans who hunted game in this area for centuries. The first white settlers arrived in 1801, when Andrew Jackson was president. They were millers from Kentucky who founded a gristmill on Beaver Creek near present-day East Ridge. In 1865, General Robert Ewell's Confederate army invaded Tennessee and captured Knoxville; east of Knoxville they burned the National Central Railroad station which destroyed many villages along the river corridor that served as transportation intoKnoxville. This caused great hardship for those living downstream and contributed to a rapid growth of East Ridge during Reconstruction period. During World War II, many residents volunteered their services in munitions production at nearby Warton munitions plant (now known asamental) where they worked long hours under very dangerous conditions including exposure to asbestos and lead poisoning. Many of these men never returned home after the war ended. In the early 1960s, a group of businessmen purchased land adjacent to Warton munitions plant from local farmers for development into an industrial suburb called Greeneville which would house large businesses such as Alcoa aluminum smelting operations (now closed), IBM Research Laboratories (closed), Monsanto seed company (Cloverdale), Coca Cola Refreshment Company (closed) and other major corporations with their employees commuting from downtown Chattanooga or elsewhere in metropolitan Chattanooga on buses or trains each day for work-related reasons within city limits only! Today Greeneville remains largely undeveloped although it does contain some small businesses that serve residents within its boundaries - most notably One Stop Shop convenience store chain that opened up shop inside one former bank building now used by Carrabba’s Pizza; while two strip malls have been built on properties formerly occupied by other companies - One Stop Shop occupying an entire block once occupied by P&G Paper Products before being converted into apartments with larger yards; while Sears vacated its old main office building across Main Street from Carrabba’s Pizza plaza before conversion into single family homes; finally Abbeys restaurant occupies an entire block once occupied by JCPenney before being converted into apartments/condos complete with green roofs! East Ridge is located in Cocke County, Tennessee, about 12 miles north of Knoxville. The community was founded in 1868 by George W. East and his family. It became a town in 1907 when it merged with Lebanon. In 1961, the community was renamed East Ridge after George W. East's grandson, Ernest B. East Jr., who had helped to develop the community and was also its first mayor. The original settlers on what is now East Ridge were farmers and their families who arrived during the early 1800s from northeastern Virginia and Maryland. They built log cabins and cleared land for farming purposes. When railroads were developed in the region, many of these pioneers moved west to work on projects such as the Cumberland Railroad and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. By 1868, most of the original settlers had died or moved away from east Tennessee because of these two railways' advances in technology and economy. Nearby Lebanon began expanding rapidly in 1907 due to factors such as its location at an intersection where two new railroads crossed each other; access to water resources; and development by entrepreneurs who saw opportunity in this growing area. At that time, east Tennessee consisted mostly of rural areas with few opportunities for people to live outside their homes or businesses). So when West Point Mills Inc., a small company started by four local businessmen looking for a better way to conduct their business than through individual stock offerings (an innovation at that time), sought city status from Cocke County, they had little competition In 1961, when Ernest Bailie Jr.'s grandfather Ernest Bailie Sr.. passed away, he succeeded him as president of West Point Mills Incorporated which owned both East Ridge Village (a town) and West Point Mills Corporation (a corporation). At that time there were no corporate entities chartered within Cocke County so Mr. Bailie established what would eventually become Eastern Kentucky University as one of several charter schools operating within Cocke County - making it one of only a handful of universities statewide at that time! In 1984-1985 Mr. Bailie purchased 1/4 acre lot next door to current home site from brothel keeper Mrs Lillian White for use as part of his private golf course used today by residents & visitors alike... gotta love our history here!
