East Ridge is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,468 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Methodists in 1853 and named for ridge in England where they had been preaching. The first post office in East Ridge was established in 1857, and the town became a railroad town when the Cumberland Railroad passed through it in 1865. A school was built on what is now Main Street in 1875 and served as an elementary school until 1959 when it closed due to budget cuts by then-Governor Don Stewart. In 1956, East Ridge voters approved annexation of neighboring Whiteface Township without having to go through a vote of residents. The city of Chattanooga annexed Whiteface Township on December 15, 2006; this action resulted in the merger of two predominantly white towns located east of downtown Chattanooga with one mostly black municipality located west of downtown Chattanooga. During that time, East Ridge lost its status as an unincorporated community within Chattanooga proper and became an adjacent part of Whiteface Township. In September 2009, East Ridge voted to secede from Whiteface Township and become its own independent municipality under the name "East Ridge". This secession process began immediately following passage by the local government body of a resolution declaring itself an "independent municipal government" separate from Chattanoogan County - effectively bringing about split between eastern and western Chattanooga neighborhoods which had long contended for control over their respective police departments (eastside residents were primarily concerned with crime while westside residents generally desired more efficient services). The effort failed to gain approval from county officials despite widespread support among area citizens who saw secession as a way to improve quality of life while still claiming affiliation with their home county; however, it remains one option available to those looking for independence should their chosen municipality not be successful ataining full statehood within Chattanoogan County any time soon.
