The fort was also used as a military prison during the American Civil War. In 1871, Colonel John Troup donated land to build the first Baptist church in Dickson. The church is still in use today and is known as “The Tabernacle”. In 1915, General John J. Pershing donated land to build the first school in Dickson. The school is now known as “John Fayette Street Elementary School”. In 1924, General George Custer gift funded a statue of him at intersection of Main Street and Elm Drive called "Custer's Revenge" after his battle at Little Big Horn near here on July 25th, 1876. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson granted land to John Cochran and his brother-in-law, John Sevier, for a small community known as The burying ground. Sevier named the community after himself and built a small chapel there. Cochran donated four cannons to the militia organization called Knox County Volunteers in 1827, which became part of the Tennessee Militia Regiment No. 5 in 1830 under Colonel George Wilkinson. The regiment was disbanded in 1833 and its cannons were sold to Nashville merchants. In 1840, General James K. Polk purchased two cannon from Colonel Wilkinson for use by the Knox County Volunteers when he became governor of Tennessee. In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg gave one cannon to Union General Ulysses S. Grant as a gift during their battle at Chickamauga Ridge near Chattanooga. In 1871, Dickson voters adopted a resolution asking President Ulysses S. Grant to construct an arsenal and gunnery school within the town limits on land donated by Major James Fisk (owner of Fisk's mill). The school opened in 1872 and continued operations until it was closed in 1905 due to World War I restrictions on artillery production that caused decline in local production of munitions overall but also led to increased demand for guns from other parts of the country Since then, many donations have been made towards improving or building up Dickson's arsenal including: 1) A new armory complex was completed in 2009 across east Main Street from Mayor Joe Sweet's office; 2) A new training range was built next door between 2013 and 2016; 3) An addition was added to existing armories across Main Street between 2007 and 2011; 4) A new ammunition storage warehouse/loading dock adjacent to current armories between 2006 and 2010;

Dickson is located on the Cumberland River and ZIP code 73501. The first settler in what is now Dickson was James Fenton who built a cabin in 1811. A post office called Fenton was established in 1813, and construction of the present church began in 1828. The first store opened in 1830 and named "Fenton's Store." In 1836, Jeptha Henson donated land to build aschoolhouse which served as the nucleus for the current school district that covers much of Dickson today. In 1865 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest Battle arrived here with his army to found what would later become known as Forrest University and establish himself as an instructor of physical culture and guerrilla warfare techniques among other things. 1the original courthouse building burned down on January 12th, 1920 but new brick buildings were erected soon thereafter due to popular demand by residents for more public services available within their community during this difficult time period following World War I (1918-21). During Reconstruction local businesses flourished such as butcher shops, grocery stores, dry goods stores etc., providing jobs for many people including African Americans who had been disenfranchised since Reconstruction ended less than two years earlier after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation effectively ending racial discrimination across America. Parish schools continued operations until they closed or merged with neighboring districts during the late 1960s when attendance rates plummeted due to increasing suburbanization throughout Robertson County resulting in little use of public facilities outside rural areas; however some students still attended parisheschools through extracurricular activities (eagle hunting/fishing trips) until about 2010 when parent choice became standard at all levels beginning elementary through high school across most southern counties experiencing these same trends nationally without any government mandated program going back to pre-2000 levels thereby limiting opportunities for low socioeconomic families residing within city boundaries regardless of race or ethnicity despite efforts by parents/ educators over recent decades to mitigate these disparities through Descendants Education Day events held annually followed by desegregation block parties/ flash mobs whenever possible inside city limits every Fourth Saturday throughout November lynching has alwaysbeen a significant event taking place several miles south of downtownMemphis during open season typically one week before or after major holiday celebrations
